Read this in the paper, lucky escape by the sounds of it.

www.dailytelegraph.com.au/nocookies?a=A.flavipes

First paragraph

TWO missing fishermen off Leeman have been rescued after one was found by a Seven Network helicopter being circled by sharks.

The first man was spotted around 10am by the Seven News helicopter with reporter Grant Taylor on board.

In live radio interviews with 6PR and the ABC, Taylor described finding the naked man treading water off the coast of Leeman, 270km north of Perth.

From the air he said he could see a "massive hammerhead'' shark circling near the man.

Sharkalarm.com.au on 9Aug2012:

"Fisheries advise a shark (unknown species) has been sighted 120m from Toms Beach, Sorrento this afternoon. The shark was 60m from surfers, feeding on fish."

Was it a fake shark, a false alarm, or just a rumour?

A merciless sea. RIP. If it is any consolation, it is my understanding (e.g. from J. Krakauer's "Dead man waving" (on Everest) and "Into the Wild") that it is better (albeit only slightly) to die after being rescued than to die struggling desperately and all alone.

It was reported on a news site as a fake. Surf life saving reported saying it was a fake. I'm not really sure. Was just saying what I'd seen.

I guess with Shark Alarm there are going to be fake reports by stupid people. It just goes with the territory

There must be a story if Surf Life Waving needed to come out and say it was fake. Shark Alarm do ask for proof if they can get it. Like photos.

This is the problem with that shark site. It's not all facts and you need facts to be able to make an informed decision about going out or not.

I agree. But then again its better than nothing. He does at least say were the info is posted from but that still doesn't give it 100% credit. I also understand that Shark Alarm really needs to post up all reports and i guess its just what we do with the info at hand

In South Africa they have set up a shark watch program. They have volunteers who sit and watch the water a a popular beach. That was the guy who got hit a few years back. He was told to stay out and he still went straight in. He was then attacked and needed to be rescued

I went for a surf down at Brighton beach on Saturday morning.

We wonder why the sharks come in close.

We counted 17 boats all chumming up with oil slicks out from where we were.

You could smell the fishy smell from where we were, imagine what the sharks are thinking!!

I talk with loads of fisherman. Sharks are definitely getting more aggressive with fishing boats. (sharks in general not GW) But the fisherman will just stay in that spot and let there fish getting eaten. Providing a easy feed for the sharks. The sharks learn this behaviour very fast and all of a sudden we now have sharks approaching boats when they first anchor up, often not even needing to to start burlying up or even fishing. That is a problem and for me jumping of a boat now seems very frighting

I read in the paper Sunday that they want to start trailing the idea of remotely activated neon shark signs at beaches. Seriously they cant even stop inconsiderate nobs from stealing the normal shark warning signs.

What if they set up a program that chums areas attracting sharks to boats, then give the shark a non lethal electric shock. But big enough that it gives it a big shock.

Would that then start to teach sharks that boats, and people are NOT the easy target they appear to be?

I have no idea of how or if it would actually work! just thinking out loud

Not to mention stupid, to the point of being criminal. So what if the beacon is then damaged I would have remembered there number and reported them to Water Police.

Its like down south they have rescue buoys placed at rock fishing areas of risk. To be used for rescuers but dicks go in and take them to hang on there shed wall

I ment to let them know at a latter time. When you've finished surfing Or maybe even let the clubbies know and with bino's maybe they could get the number.

Was the surf any good though

I tried to complain to fisheries about that very practise. 6 shark carcasses cut up and filleted on ramp. Tried three different officers and could not raise anyone. Rang them back at office on the next day (Friday).
On the monday i got a call from a fisheries office in Fremantle just checking to see if i was happy with the service they had offered me I let her know

I don't get it. What did the iFish guy do? I'm not pulling the piss, I don't get the link between leaving carcases and the iFish guy. Did he recommend doing it?
