OK, saw on the news that Perth surfers are upset that fisheries didn't warn them of sharks setting off monitoring stations near Cottesloe.

WTF ?? Do you want them to ring you up and tell you ??

Shout out to Laurie / Admins, is there any way of getting a data feed from these monitoring stations iinto SEABREEZE ??

http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Education-and-Partnerships/Shark-Hazard/Shark%20research/Pages/Extension-of-the-shark-monitoring-network.aspx

That would be a GOOD service to provide, waves, wind, weather, and shark activity (check before you go)

I couldn't find a page that shows activity, but I didn't search for long.
I did, however, email fisheries and ask them if there is, or if they are planning, such a service.

Ok, update,... just found this:

Shark sightings should be reported to the Water Police on 9442 8600. This number is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Surf Life Saving WA provides frequent updates on its helicopter beach patrols and shark sightings via Twitter and Facebook.

SO, no excuses for not checking ??

I agree, however what i disagree with is why fisheries won't divulge whether or not it was only 1 tagged shark that was setting off the receivers or if it was several tagged sharks.

Why the f#ck wouldn't they give out this information?!?!?!
I know i'd like to know if there's just 1 hanging around or there are several...

Maybe they don't code the tags so that they can identify different sharks, I don't know ??

I'm pretty sure that each tagged shark has it's size and characteristics like scars etc recorded when they tag it so they'd know exactly which ones setting off the receiver.
When that one up at mulla's set off the receiver like 60 times over a weekend they knew that it was the same shark.

I've wanted to start this thread but resisted as i know how everyone hates sharks, and talking about them. I'd say shark alarm dropped off as SLSWA were doing virtually the same thing by advising on FB and twitter. Problem is SLSWA have stopped updating on FB, only now update on twitter. I emailed them and asked why and they said they didn't think it necessary and was too time consuming. Apparently one link used to update both but it no longer does so they just stick it on twitter.

Over the last few weeks the tag's have been going OFF

Once again our fisheries and SLSWA trying to keep us in the dark. That was why Shark Alarm was first started to just educate people before entering the water.

They really don't want the public knowing any real details. I cant for the life of me understand why though

That's just f#cked IMO.
I just hope it's not another bad season for them.
Not a good sign but if they're hanging around in numbers already... and that's just the tagged ones...

They have been around for a few weeks. I just don't get why they would have this technology and then don't use it? What do they have to gain by not sharing the info at hand. Are they worried people will stay out of the water if talk of sharks again? Well personally for me I think by saying nothing they then create more problems for local business and tourism in the long run.

Sadly it always seems to be out of sight out of mind. Did anyone see today there was another fatality in Reunion. That's 5 fatality's since 2011 for them

Agreed, drive safely. Every year a new safety gadget comes out on new cars; reversing cameras, sensors etc, do you go out and buy a new car to have these features ??? No, we continue to drive safely as we have always done.
Soon the tech will be there to satellite monitor in real time on our water proof phones. Are we going to sit out the back checking for sharks. I know I'm not.

Who actually cares about sharks? You get munched you get munched.. its a game of Russian roulette. you can use sharkalarm.com.au but I found It did no justice it just tells you were they were spotted. Yea it is good that people report them and in wich case many times after a days surfing I got out to check the activity and there was one only a km away.. I didn't see it.. I had a good surf.. and a wonderful day. My opinion is just get out there and don't worry bout them, if one nails ya ya wont even know. It will most prob bite you in half and youlle bleed out in minutes anyway. I wish there was more of them and that people report them, that way it will keep the retards out the water. My advice grow a pair, roll the dice and tell your family you love them before you go surfing.

I heard the receivers were just data loggers and had to be retrieved to download the info.
On the other hand coming from a small tourism town reports of sharks or jellyfish can reduce tourism numbers pretty quick.

If you read the fisheries website you will see that some are like that. You need to remove the receiver from the ocean floor to get the data from it. I especially liked these because they still call that real time data. Real time could be up to a month old But not all are this style. Some will actually produce real time data. That includes details of shark but fisheries don't the point in us knowing if its one shark or multiple sharks setting of receivers

Sharks don't stop me surfing. If i could " Grow a set" id probably use them to charge bigger waves first before i jumped into the water whilst a shark is swimming around at my chosen beach

Quote Though he hasn’t been keen to surf since the incident about four weeks ago and had to have time off from his job at a local supermarket because of the pain, Troy said he feels lucky the situation wasn’t worse."

Are you serous. He hasn't been for a surf because he just had major surgery on his arm, and arms are important when surfing

Scary stuff and it shows the dangers of surfing..On his own and lucky really

I think the sensitivity about putting the data from the loggers "out there" is the pushback from the industries that will be hurt by having everyone too scared to go near the ocean, eg. tourist, surf, scuba, etc...(recent comments from a dive operator regarding the new wetsuits being developed, and how quiet the dive indusrty has been) ??

The other side of the coin (in the case worst scanario of a fatality) would be the family of a victim suing Fisheries for NOT putting the data out there, which may have disuaded the victim from swimming, surfing, diving, at that location had they known.

Now, don't get me wrong on the above point, as far as I'm concerned, it's individual choices and individaul responsibility (I hate the "blame" mentality of our society these days).

With regard to scuba, I know that there has been year on year growth in the polularity of scuba divingin W.A. up about 2008 / 9, when we had two factors, 1) GFC, and 2) Increated shark activity.

I've had mates just stop fiving altogether, "yeah, I've written this season off, lets wait and see for next year" was one comment.

As for me, it's business as usual, but it would be good to have easy access to the data at hand, right ?

Anyhoo, time for brekky and a surf check !!
