Perth residents and construction workers are urged to tie down loose objects as severe weather begins hitting the city.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning on Thursday for residents from Kalbarri, north of Geraldton, to Albany on Western Australia's south coast.

Rain has begun falling across the city, and the storm is expected to bring hail, heavy rain and strong gusts of wind which could reach 90kmh.

Senior BoM forecaster Adam Conroy said weather is a pretty dramatic change from the patterns WA has experienced for the past two weeks.

"The first cold front is currently moving through Perth, and it's going to cause some reasonably heavy showers this afternoon," Mr Conroy said on Thursday.

"There's a risk of squally conditions with the potential for damaging winds gust associated with the second front tonight looking like hitting 90kmh."

Mr Conroy said the storm is expected to bring hail, but it would not be as severe as the massive storm which lashed Perth in March.

The WA Fire and Emergency Services Authority urged residents to tie down loose objects which could be picked up and carried by strong winds, and cause damage and injury.

FESA has also warned construction site workers to store loose building materials and tie down sheds, and advised people to keep their cars under cover.

Piece of crap windswell looks like it'll disappear quickly. Wednesday I'll be raring to go after over two weeks out of the water. Maybe even Monday.

Pathetic. The only reason this storm was hyped was we had a 100-year hailstorm in March. I watched the news and they were saying "we will get hail but it won't be like the storm in March ...". No ****. It was a run-of-the-mill cold front, only noteworthy because it's the first one of the year and very, very late. There was some cool lightning and thunder near my house about 3:30am. Very loud, sharp and close. But just a storm.

Hopefully the high tides combined with the onshore and swell spike do their thing for the next few days.

Gero got its total rainfall for winter in 10 minutes . Pissed down, all my gutters were over flowing and soakwells couldnt cope. Thats enough for us, send the rain south where people are used to it
