Ok so you have had your fun throwing your toys. How about providing some other solution / suggestion that we can discuss the merits of.

I have no sympathy for you Surf I go to the Ments and .......the Ment locals get nothing ..i.e. sweet fu(k all from charter boats........nothing at one stage 40 were / are operating from Padang.

OK land based employ a few locals.....100 USD per month .....if lucky........woopty do fu(king BS what your hourly rate gain?

If the tax is skimmed by local officials at least they will spend it in Padang or Ments unlike all the wankers on boats sucking Bintangs complaining about the crowds.

Then there are all the expats taking local jobs surf guides, yoga etc...........get real bloke do you speak Indo?

A user pay system, doesn't really seem that un reasonable to me

The suggestion of corruption or the fact that the locals may not get the funds anyway, is a local problem and an other issue all together..

I have never been and most prob never will, when you are paying minimum$2.5k for 7 days?? Is way outta my pay grade (excuse the Americanism) Now chuck on another $100...... Where is all that cash going....Ments local will still get nothin coz the govt based in Jakarta will get it and the boat/land camp operators will take a management fee out of it and the international "surf guides" and the............
maybe it's making up for the $50US you dont pay anymore....but wait that's under review too!!

not whinging because I can't afford Ments - but it's the principal, like arguing a cab driver down by 50c !! This $100 will be $125 next year $150 the year after and so on.......

I am a firm believer in user pays tax's - like GST - its the fairest approach on most issues - most tradies will disagree with me on this one - but thats for another discussion. Its fair to question whether or not the tax will make its way to the people its most intended to - in Indo we know that there will be a bit "lost" on the way sadly Happens in Oz as well lets not forget.

The issue here though is that the boat boys have been taking advantage of a lovely resource for a long period of time and not really paid for it - and few of them have actually given back and attempted to make any real difference to the communities who live where those resources are. So the Govt has stepped in to try and re-locate some of that money. This also might have a nice effect on crowds as well - as people will decide to go elsewhere as its getting too expensive - and elect to go elsewhere.

So if you are a boat owner I would suggest you stop moaning about what has been done and come up with a more palatable solution for all - you have had more than enough time to do something positive about it and most have chosen not to. I am not pointing the finger directly at you - but generalising. There are loads of different options employed across the world. Eg - Fishing licenses / quotas that can be traded. So think about the range of possibilities /solutions and present your case. Sitting in the corner sulking, hoping it will go away will get you no where
