A good surfer in certain conditions, but im not sure how he managed a world title, he's always surfing on one foot.

Nothing wrong some good old fashioned back foot surfing Torch. Occ was unbeatable in solid waves from 97 to 99. His backhand turns at the Bells skins events circa 97 were some of the best ever. IMO

Occ is my favourite surfer through and through!! Alot of guys my age are right into parko and taj and definately kelly. Some powder puffs are even into John John and other little fellas.

I personally love seeing big gunny 6 foot 7s and the like being pushed hard on Mystery lefts or psychadelic desert waves. I think it is amazing. I like seeing half of J Bay being raped and abused by an animal of a backhand rider going nuts in the mid 90s. I personally like seeing a big heavy animal abusing bells back in the day on a channel bottom board.

I love his surfing and he is my favourite.

After getting a good wave I love talking to my friends in a real nasal voice. Or just using the nasal voice in general, jumping on his bandwagon. I reckon he'd be even funnier in real life than he seems on the videos / dvds

I think Slater having the year off played a big role in that.

Its pretty hard to get sick of watching good surfing. I watched a few of his heats at this years Drug aware pro, Still F**ken rips and throws bucketloads. got to have a surf at lefties when he was out there too. Pretty good to watch. Nice bloke aswell.

His biography is a pretty good read. Spent 7 or 8 years on the couch at one stage.
I also have a JS Occy which I absolutely love...

Ha ha! I'm a powder puff! Don't reckon there've ever been many as comfortable in big hollow waves as John John. Especially given his age. The progressive surfing is just a bonus. Now if you'd said Chloe, I would've agreed with you ...

Was there as a grom froze my ass off for the whole event, that year was a cold one.
Cracked him up laughing in the carpark a day or 2 earlier. I was trying to get his photo while holding a hotdog covered is dead horse. Not enough hands so I dropped the hotdog on the ground to take a shot.

whats that old saying about never meeting your hero's
the book was a good read but it detracted from my exalted opinion of him
still one of the greatest power surfers ever
MP's bio was a great read but it certainly didn't make me think i wanted to go to the pub and have a beer with him much less introduce him to a girlfriend
same goes for the scar tissue bio about anthoy keidis
loved the RHCP now i struggle to listen to them
could be a certain element of envy being a klutz on the guitar and a kook in the surf
the journals of william dampier , cook , flinders, hartog, mawson are a bit more inspiring for me being the average plodder

Well said ! Although I did sort of enjoy how Kiedis's old man sorted him out for his birthday when he was younger - wish my old man had done that for me

The best was the last year we did the Margret Masters ski support, Mitch Thorson instructed (over the micropphone) one of the skies into the surf area eventually interfering with Occy on a wave. My mate was devo'd in fact in tears on the beach afterwards. Expecting a huge spray from the great man Occ just said "she's cool, wasn't your fault" sat down and had a drink and laugh about it
