Seems after the Fanning incident, a few more people talking about shark deterring devices. This one supposedly part of a deck grip tail pad set up. Not sure if I could afford falk out that coin on top of a new board.

Just got sent this email from O and E

I know that it wont be released till 2016 and will cost aprox $550 - $600
I think I would prefer to support Daves surf safe. Just waiting to see if he can suss out some way of changing from board to board.

Shark shield had a trailing lead. Dav system suits me.

Not sure how a system that sits above the water would work. More info needed I suppose.

Need a system that is either built into the fins, or can slot into the spare fin boxes (for boards with 5). Interchangeable between boards.

The unit in discussion is actually the Shark shield product that they are currently trying to make. The WA state government gave them nearly $300000 to develop a product that will be more suited for surfing than there existing bulky unit Surf 7. Ive seen pictures of the newer style and its still big. The idea is the fins will be set up as a electrode and the tail pad will house the brain or power plant. The idea is that it will be interchangeable between boards.

An absolute shame that Surfsafe was over looked yet funds provided to this option as its no were in the same league as Dave's IMHO

Part of the biggest issue is the fins will be the first thing that gets damaged or knocked out. Have a look at Surfsafe and you'll see how well situated the unit and electrodes are. Also the electrodes will be very close together so therefor reducing the protected field.

Looks okay good to have a choice it might put a bit of weight under the back foot. If it is easily changed from one board to another then it does give it a point of differenc. I like the surf safe. Shame the gov helped them and not Dave

Why does Daves electrodes have to go under glass. Thers some super sticky clear 3m tapes on the market. Can't the main unit be made so it fits into a box, and the electrodes stuck on. I know people are gonna say " but what about it effecting performance?"

Lets face it im sure if the electrodes are only a mm or two thick most wouldnt even notice it. The amount of dings and wax i see on the bottom of peoples boards. Just a thought but i havnt seen one of the surf safe units. If that method of install was possible Dave could sell the main unit, and how ever many electrode kits the customer needs??

The portability of surf safe is easy. An FCS / Futures type base but I think the $$$$ owed to Dave by his investment and research might need to marry up a little before a transferable system comes into being. Each board you own could have an electrode and docking unit built into it then the surf safe unit locks in and out of each board as you need it......the design part is easy and probably already completed....
now if Mr Barnett could fund someone other than his bubbles/flashing lights and helicopter day tripper teams a portable surf safe may already be available and all of us who already have one could get the docking unit retro fitted for a few extra bucks

It should be said its still in development though. Its something they were given money to try and produce.. (if the money had been given to Dave instead we would now have a fully operating interchangeable system) Oh and nearly half the price of the Shark shield

The benefit of Surfsafe is it does nothing to deter from your performance. You simply won't feel any negative effect from having it installed, you won't know its their

Surf safe gets a mention here and i think we need to try and share/promote the product to eventually help ourselves.

Dave and I suppose a lot of have come along way over the last 18 months. Surf safe can only get better. I think it's good there are other companies designing and testing. It can only make it safer for all of us and the Sharks. I believed we should cull now I lean towards we should take maters into our own hands and protect ourselves. That's thanks to Dave and surf safe. I don't want to hijack the topic on culling just the change in attitude.

taping electrodes is great to save costs but with a potential life saving product it needs to be robust and work 100%
and being in the board game for over 30years I see how boards get treated

ive just spent the past few days talking to some of the worlds best manufactures and weight and performance is so critical. I am not going to cut corners on quality.
we had a proto interchangerble model we tested earlier this year but was not 100% successful so we have a new model in the pipeline and will hopefully be out by the end of the year .This has almost tripled our budget costs but I wont realease any thing until we are 100%happy with it

One of my concerns with the electro field the similar devices put out is that does it initially attract in sharks who are inquisitive to the pulses , and then only cause them to react when they get close enough? If a 5m man eater came through would there be enough pulse to still do the job?

I have chosen to stop wearing my SDS due to this concern and would rather run the gauntlet .....

All the reports talk about electric pulses through the water. For the Shark Shield that is more powerful than Surfsafe, the Head scientist at UWA Ryan Kempster stated that the power of the unit it could not be felt past 15 m . As he pointed out a large shark will detect you through other sensors once with in 100 m so the point is that it will already know of your existence before it gets anywhere near the electric pulse.

Good point. But I feel the key to these things being successful is having it interchangeable. If it was interchangeable I would go and buy one now, but I use different boards quite often and no way could afford to have one in every board.

Maybe in the future it would be more cost effective to have some sort of electrodes built in to all blanks rather than to retro fit the units after? Just throwing around ideas

I was led to believe shark shield was made under licence from the Natal sharks board in south africa

the testing was done on the freedom 7 there current diving adapted not this inbuilt product is that not misleading
