hi all,

I did a bit of a search but couldn't find much info on mexico. I am going there for three weeks next month with 10 days of that exploring the coast between salina cruz and Acapulco so i'm just wondering if anyone has been there on a surf trip and can offer any recommendations?

thanks

I was there in March. Wrong time of the year swell wise, but it was the end of a long trip in North America.

I surfed from Puerto Escondido down to Barra.

You've seen Puerto in print and know what you're in for. Lots of closeouts when I was there, but apparently a week before and week after it was good... The point is super fun as well. Half way between Acapulco and Puerto there is a river mouth you should be able to find on google earth. I didn't surf it last trip but I have heard good things.

Heaps of fun beachies in the San Augustino, and Huatulco areas. Cheap accommodation, great food, great people.

The points are what you want though. Bit of a drive from Huatulco, fickle, and not much accommodation.
I scored Barra de la Cruz for a few days. It was only head and bit but super fun, long and rippable. The local boys told me it sucked! and to come back in summer when its actually worth surfing haha! Cheap accommodation walking distance to the point, and chilled out locals. Everyone knows about Barra now, so apparently it gets a bit busy June, July August.

Loads of points between Barra and Salinas. Each one has its day depending on conditions and some are pretty hard to find, so be prepared to do some driving. Beware of terrible roads and crazy Mexican drivers!! The local surf camp/tours can be really territorial, but if you're not where they are on the day, its pretty darn uncrowded.

Some locals put me on to some good spots, so pm me if you want some more detailed info.

I loved Mexico. Fresh, delicious food, beautiful landscape, awesome people. Oaxaca - where you'll be spending most of your time surfing by the sounds of it- is incredibly welcoming and relaxed. Learn some Spanish.

If you can, spend some time in Mexico City. Stay in Condesca or Roma areas. Mexico City is one of my favourite cities. Don't believe any bad reports you hear about it. Oaxaca city is amazing. San Jose del Pacifico - mountain village between Pochutla and Oaxaca City is great respite from the heat. Also the magic shroom capital of Mexico!

I spent 8 months driving from the USA to Panama, Mexico was the bomb!!!! Went during the wet season or summer and scored empty waves

this guide helps a little and will get you on the right track, but we found some sic spots by talking to other surfer over there.
www.tactics.com/

Its not as good as the Baja guide....and its expensive by the looks of it. I got my copy free from another surfer leaving mexico

I went in 2000 from a few months and it was sick..hitched every where (not recommended) and camped on the beach at lots of places for free (recommended)...people were really nice...beach breaks were heavy..americans were friendly on land assholes in the water....
