best bet for land based is kandui resort, kandui villas or wavepark exxy but has the best chance of scoring waves due to the variety of setups for varying conditions ...you won't be lonely though with the amount of boats there!....kandui resort has the added bonus of the most consistent 2 turn wave going within paddling distance!4bobs
the land based camps will give you more wave time but less variety than a boat charter ,having said that one wave at rifles will make your trip if not your entire surfing career and if you can make a wave at nokandui your most terrifying short of shipsterns or teahupoo!
stick to the code when in the water "what would mark richards do in this situation" and you will be sweet!

I would like a good value budget tour whether land based or on a boat, from what I've seen so many charters and camps seem so overpriced now !!

To surf a variety of waves would best suit the charter option ? and if a crowd comes get out of there or move to the next bay, point or beach.

Honestly bro I would look at other options unless you haven't been before....went last year and had really good to excellent surf everyday but the number of people at a some places was retarded...we went on the Melaluca and the boat and crew were excellent and we did have some really nice uncrowded sessions but for the money you pay I would want a lot less people in the water

I've wondered about that myself tux, every second bloke you talk to has just been or is going, hardly ground breaking exploration!
And paying **** loads for the luxury of being stuck on a boat with 10 other blokes for a week, no thanks!
Having said that, i haven't done it, so feel free to convince me otherwise

Its worth going once bro the waves are incredible but when it gets good and bigger the last thing you want is 20-30 blokes pushing you to deep or paddling around you...its sharp, shallow and long way home

There's heaps of other joints out there if you have a little squiz. Ments is epic but used to be reasonable price, no crowds epic.... Crew flock there now... One mate went last year and reckoned there were 40 boats in some spots!!! Better off renting an overpriced unit at snapper rocks!!! Mate, checkPNG, Timor, sth Sumatra, similue, solomans New Caledonia... There's joints everywhere piping everyday with no one out....

I've done Ments a few times now and absolutely love it.

Yes its more crowded than it was 10 years ago, but do your research and go with someone who will get you waves.

I'd go with a boat rather than a land camp, as you have a much greater range of options and you can always pull anchor and move off if conditions change for the worse or the place gets crowded.

Another plus with boats is that you can be on the wave at dawn, whereas a lot of the camps will wait for all guests to finish breakfast before the skiff leaves at around 8 or 9am. The same goes for the arvo glass off, the camp skiffs like to have everyone head back for dinner around 4:30-5, while you and your mates get to stay out for another hour until dark.

Find a boat with a western captain or guide that surfs! These guys spend 8 months of the year in the Mentawais and Padang, and they'll be keen to avoid the crowds just as much as you!

Granted its well worth visiting the bucket list spots like HT's and Macaronis, but if you are happy to surf lesser quality (yet still much better than anything you will get in Perth - EVER) then an experienced captain or guide should be able to drop you on a wave that you'll have all to yourself.

We scored a perfect barreling warm water slab to ourselves last time off of the North Island, we didn't see another soul there for 3 days!

Wish we could turn back time to the late 80's surfing these places with only ya mates you are travelling with, paying local fishing boats 10 000Rp to drop you out to these then deserted islands and hope they return in 2 weeks to pick you up.
Makes me cringe hearing now of 50 people in the water at some of these spots we use to go that didnt even have a name.

now that is one thing I don't want to pay thousands for !!!

how about shoulder season, waves probably less reliable but hey fewer in the water - will definitely look at other destinations ??
