Awesome news, I wonder which break they will use as a back up venue if surfers point isn't happening on the day? I've been to the event for the last 8 years and it has almost been the same every year, 8-10ft plus consistent mid week and 2 ft with 3 wave heats in the finals, I know this can happen at any spot around the world but I just hope they have a back up plan so we can keep the event here and not lose it because of inconsistency.

Anyone want to suggest a back up, obviously needs to be able to cater for the crowds and infrastructure that comes with the wct set up?

Cheers

As a WCT event the number of days needed to run becomes less and waiting period extends so I think if you look back at swell events they have had they would have had enough good days to run at main break.

Having said that there are spots protected from south west if swell up and some great swell magnets if it went mobile.

Not brave enough to start naming though.

South point is a similar wave, but I dont think there will be a problem as the point is a swell magnet anyway so there is generally a wave of quality there.

Remember Currens wave from out the back, main break right through to river mouth!! Had to run up the hill through the carpark. Or. When the windsurfers went out and the wave face was taller than their masts

Remember watching that as a grom and being amazed. Especially currens nonchalant attidue when interviewed,...he kinda said yep I got a long one,...understatement of the year.
It was pumping that day,...I watched my video tape recording of it so many times I could remember the commentary almost word for word.
ahhhh the good old days

Was reading an interview with Camel the other day and ever since that wave of Curren's, getting one through from the point to the rivermouth has been known as "Currensing" and still only a handful of crew have done it.

I think this is fantastic news, my only concern is now it has world status, how much work needs to be done in Margs, accomodation, parking and the environment will be an issue and will the common man be able to afford the week down there to watch it. It's fast becoming a millionaires play ground down there so some of us might not be invited.

Its more like a combination of sites like wannasurf ,surfschools, surfcams, mobile phones and idiots on forums posting specific information and names of surf spots.
If i have a good surf somewhere, i don't let it be known to every man and his dog where. Because guess what? The next day they will be there. It ain't that difficult to work out.

Cry me a river, all of the spots mentioned are on a map that you can buy from any surf shop so none of them are secret. Are you going to start burning down surf shops now? Plus if you know where to look you will find gems that are empty or close too alot of the time.
Winge on here as much as you like but you aint gonna stop people talking and using social media so give up, its not worth it.

Do you really blame forums? You ever thought it could have anything to do with more surfers in the water than ever before? Bigger population in general makes everything busy.

The freeway is not busier everyday because it gets mentioned hourly in the traffic reports

I think anyone that makes a profit or gets "paid" to surf has a lot more to answer for than forums. Why? Because they will take photos, video, twitter and Facebook it to the masses. The wct is the worst as now it has the greatest media coverage and biggest circus following it. You only need to look at the rubbish and collapsed sand dunes left at Portugal and to see what can be left behind.

One thing is for sure the crowds get worse every year

Portugal was a search event before it became a regular spot and they wanted it back because it was so popular. At the end of the day its up to the places that hold these events to make sure the enviroment is looked after, they want the events so its their resposibility imo.
Crowds are going to get worse as the population grows and we cant stop that.
MR mains can handle it as its had many comps there and will continue to do so.
At the end of the day most of us know most of the spot down south and up north but if you know a "secret spot" keep it to yourself and dont tell anybody, that way if you get hit by a shark you will surly die because the spot where you are is a secret. Take the risk.

I think the problem with mess and crowd behaviour rests with the crowd, not really the organisers But i agree its the people today have little respect for anything or even worse anyone
