Maldives too risky for a trip in March considering it is the start of the season? Only chasing 3 to 6 foot surf. Everything seems to tick the boxes for the trip in relation to accommodation (taking the wife), type of wave etc etc.

Tossing up between Hudhuranfushi and Kandooma

Anyone been in March? Would really appreciate any advice.

I've been late March a couple of times and always been great, although on the smaller side. Not sure if we were lucky but winds were actually much better than later season when I've been. The only downside is the current seems to run faster then so you get a couple of hours a day when it is a struggle. Based on what we got in March I think it is good to also pack a board that paddles well if there are smaller waves or decent waves but the current is in. I'd go in March again but you can be unlucky like anywhere!

March is epic for wind but the swell can be fickle kandooma needs a bit of swell to get going bit is nicer the lohifushi which normally has a pretty hectic crew for maldives as its a bit cheaper.
1-2 foot most days in march maybe a couple four footers there is two-3 hours a day of tide which even if you are Hercules is pretty tough.
If you do however get swell this early there is generally a few less people around maldives 1-2 foot glass days are amazing and a 100 metre ride is still possible.
I would take a high performance backed up with a fish or easy paddler cruiser.
If you can wait till april there can be a bit more swell and winds are still good.
Pasta is also god to stay at i have done kandooma once (july) and pastas 3 times april july Sept...
Stayed at lohis once for a week which was also ok, lohis is closer to cokes so i wanted to tick that off the list. At lohis you surf the wave out front cokes and day trips to sultans honkys or ninjas Kandooma has the right and a left round the corner and 2 other spots (bit fickle )

Pasta has pasta point and sultans on the neighbouring island, if ya lucky honkys and jails may break as well

I would not go to the South Male atolls (for land based trip). Its too much risk because there's a big swell shadow. South Male atolls are ok if you're passing through for a couple of nights but too fickle to blow that much cash.I've heard good things about lohi's as it seems to be a bit more of a magnet, but like all the lefts in that region it can be wind affected.

If I were to go again I would go to cokes surf camp. It doesn't get as many charter boats as jails/sultans and its an epic wave. Most of the cokes crew head over to chickens anyway.
