July and August is peak season in the Ments, so you're guaranteed waves, and crowds.
Macca's does indeed have 2 moorings, so if you're going by boat your charter company will need to book a mooring in advance. Charter boats can anchor before 9am and after 5pm, but between those times the locals enforce a 2 Boat policy.
Most boats in the Ments will have 8-10 guests (some can have more), plus a guide and a few crew members that surf. Then you have the Maccas surf camp which can house 25-30 guests, and of course you get the smaller tenders with 5-6 surfers from camps nearby. All these can add up to 40+ blokes scrambling for the sets.
Maccas is an awesome wave, well worth ticking off the bucket list, but I've never surfed it with less than a dozen other dudes in the lineup, even when small and onshore. Sometimes you'll score a cruisy lineup where everyone takes turns, and other times you'll get brazzos or frothing groms from Kirra who paddle straight past the lineup every time.
KFC's on the other hand is the right that breaks on the opposite side of the channel. I've had that to myself for hours on a few occasions.
What this guys said....we were there last year on a boat and managed to have quite a few good sessions over three days...it was pretty polite most of the time even with 20+ in the water...as long as your patient you will score a few....
