Yep, crazy busy all season, and even worse when a decent swell is forecast.

The peak itself has 30+ blokes on it by 6am most days, and other surfable breaks like nungas are a good 40 minute walk away (invest in anti-chafing cream).

If you do decide to go, get your accommodation to collect you from the airport in Bima. The 'beemo mafia' will most likely want to rob you, or fight you, or both!

On the flip side went there in '88 and there was next to nothing there, Paul King had his accom down at Periscopes, three or four guys out at six am, got sick waves and my mate got malaria, big contrast to cable tv, wifi, pool, great food, but I know which one nearly all readers of this forum would choose...........

Pros:
- Picks up swell
- Good waves in the morning
- Cheap
- Some uncrowded but low quality spots within driving distance

Cons:
- Crowded
- Arvo trade winds (unless you kite)
- Not much to do other than surf or kite (for family)
- Ugly landscape compared to other locations
- Not much in the way of transport for exploring (and the road ended in a pile of rubble when I tried)

Kinda got the wrong end of the stick there Doc I meant most readers of this forum would choose a tent and malaria risk over the crowds and comfort but hey I'm used to a comment going all kinds of wrong I'm married after all.

Same here...went back in the late 80's. The bus station at Dompu in the middle of the night was a wild and wooly place back then.
All the guys unloading the cargo off the buses had sticks or machetes down the backs of their shirts and were not in the least friendly.
When I was there it was reasonably crowded to boot.
Haven't been back again.

Transport marfia f&^%ed us up big time.

And I was traveling with a group of 3 with 1 local.

The accommodation as Leakey is great and the people are very friendly.

Up behind the surf and into the hills - we found a tunnel the Japanese apparently made during the war.

Went 15 years ago peak super crowded but scored periscopes with no one out a few times - seemed no one could be bothered with the walk down there - probably packed to buggery now

It's so crowded, otherwise a very nice place.
