Hi there,

I'm looking for a bit of advice for safe/clean places to stay in the Kuta area.

Flying out in three weeks and will be on the island for approx 9 days. Can anyone recommend decent accommodation?

Travelling solo so would be good to stay somewhere with a bit of a communal vibe (although not looking for a party spot, if there is such a place in Lombok) - ideally it offers some kind of surf guide service.

As i mentioned in the first line, clean and safe are the most importnant criteria.

i've read that my trip coincides with a japanese national holiday so keen to get something booked asap.

Any tips appreciated.

Cheers,
ben.

Plenty small losman/home stay accom in kuta and gerupuk.
The SURF INN KUTA offered surf guide as part of its deal I think. The KUTA indah was ok but is pretty dated, (renos going on last year) b/fast not flash but rooms ok! Plenty good cheap restaurants in kuta
SeaMonkeys ($17 a night last yr) in Gerupuk has great food, a boat to the breaks, great staff and the rooms attached to it seemed ok-going by the hot swedes and German chickies staying. Ask ALIM at Rasta surf (kuta), his in laws run sea monkeys, Aussie owned and built he is also a good bloke and great surf guide. Plenty of similar accom either side of it too, chilled out vibe between surfs, Rasta music ( pretty sure bob Marley must be played by LAW,!!!!) and locals choosing da weed.

For safety I recommend a guide if you are gonna go to the land based breaks espesh Mawi, but the ones you get to by boat around Gerupuk are cool

If u wanna stay in style the Novotel about $120-140 night

Check out AGODA, ASIAROOMS or WOTIF for Lombok accom KUTA.

I had a great time and am going back next year.

there are a couple of hotel chains located in the area, Sheraton, Novatel etc We stayed in Senggigi and went to Gerupuk each day. The Kuta/Gerupuk area seemed pretty low end for accomm options as far as we could see (2011) and to be honest we were pretty happy with our choice of 5 star resort for around 50 bucks each per night. However, with the cost of a driver plus boat hire we racked up a fair bill (by Indo standards) each day. By staying in Senggigi we did have the option of checking DP each morning on our way to Gerupuk which was cool. The Gerupuk village was in the midst of a building boom with some pretty nice apartments under construction at the time so that might be worth checking out mate. Awesome surf with minimal crowds but if you can afford to get over to Sumbawa for a couple of days, well worth it oh yeah, the flight attendants on the domestic carrier were the hottest I've ever seen!!

Careful with your stuff in the hotels over in Kuta Lombok
Had a few mates that got ripped while they were out for dinner
Cops apparently in on it (usual ****e)
They lost money, passports etc
Make sure your valuables are locked up
Remember your a walking ATM

I stayed at Bumbangku on the other side of the bay from Gerupuk in September.
Prices were about $20 per night for me and the missus, and about $20 for our meals per day.
The guys were great and there was no problem with security.
They have a website.
The only problem were the 40 germans in the surf at a time, and 5 of them on every wave.
They have a different idea about surf etiquette.

Just on this, what is the best way to secure valuables in your room (typical cheap indo accom).
my next trip i'm planning on taking $$$ expensive camera gear and lappy etc. Apart from travel insurance which covers it, any other measure to prevent it from being knocked off?
Usually I just travel with boards and boardies, this time I won't be though.
