The project to develop a massive cruise ship terminal, marina and casino along Kirra foreshore is back on the agenda and the developers are serious. The project includes land grabbing 1km of public beach along Kirra/Bilinga and developing a marina stretching 1km out to sea. The developers have said they'd be able to start within six months if they get the go ahead. The time to act is now. If you're against this monstrosity and potential blight on the southern Gold Coast, the troops are marshalling - go to the Save Our Southern Beaches Alliance FB page and like it and get ready to get involved! Spread the word!

why don't you wait to get all the FACTS before you whip yourself and others into a frenzy of misinformation.

Ready to start in 6 months is just BS !!! ready to start design maybe...!

Nothing but a few concept designs have been prepared and presented to date.

There will be at least a years worth of environmental and economic impact studies before a Development Application can even be lodged and considered by Council. Then it goes to all the state government agencies for consideration, comment, conditions etc....

There will be years of design on a project this big.

It will all be there for the public to read and comment. Then you can inform yourself and pass judgement.

the horse has bolted on the gold coast. it is a city that is underwritten and survives on tourism and development - like it or not! Shut the gate now and all you get is higher unemployment and everything that comes with that.

In the meantime keep your powder dry and your your mind open !

PS - there are plenty of good waves created by seawalls and groins

Mate, with all due respect you are tripping.....

Ironically your attitude that the horse has bolted is not shared with the majority of tourists that come to the area. Talk about facts, look at the facts we already have. The majority of International tourists that come here do not come for the Casinos and hotels. They come for the beaches and natural environment found so closely to the concrete jungles that provide places to stay and airports not so far away.

The building of these kind of developments provide no additional benefit to this city. They only serve to increase our dependence on tourism and ignore the fact that we are able to actually create local industry to serve the people that actually live here.

Not to mention that destroying our natural beauty will likely reduce the amount of tourists net. As an extremely weatlthy International friend told me last month, he would bring his family here for the nature. Wildlife Sanctuary, Byron Bay, our beaches. If he wanted cruise ship terminals, casinos and theme parks he'd go somewhere else at a 3rd of the price. Florida perhaps......

I'm guessing you voted Tate, if you did forgive my initial comment about respect, you've lost me.

CMC - you have a pretty romantic view of the GC but if you go to the ABS your view is unfortunately not supported.

The biggest tourist group that visits the gold coast are the Chinese and that's growing rapidly. It's also the area where the government and tourism bodies are specifically targeting. You say they don't come here for the casinos and hotels ??? Well that's not right either because that's part of the reason they do come. Along with shopping, restaurants, bars, beach and of course theme parks.

The domestic market still represents the most tourist numbers which are people coming to the beach, theme parks, shopping, restaurants and bars. About 30% of domestic tourists are here to vist friends and relatives.

Favorite locations for tourists to stay on the GC - surfers, broadbeach and mainbeach. Favorite beaches and favourite places to go to to shop and eat - surfers, broadbeach and main beach (the spit).

The largest employer on the gold coast is retail services, followed by construction and real estate services/ accommodation letting etc.. These will all by higher than the national averages which reflects where the money comes from.

What you need to understand is that Australia desperately relies on tourism. The mining boom is over, we are losing manufacturing business to Asia at a rapid rate and tourism is an area that we can compete in. But like a bar, restaurant or niteclub you need to stay relevant and reinvest in yourself or people stop coming. If you think times were tough during the GFC it would be much worse if people stopped reinvesting in the coast with tourism projects because it wouldn't be just the direct tourism industries that would suffer it would be all the supporting industries also.

I could go on for hours here but many people won't or can't see the big picture. This isn't MY view im just repeating what the statistics and research shows.

You don't need to get personal and start sledging as I've never said what my position is on the marina at the south end. If you look at the research it may make more sense to put the marina where the current infrastructure and tourist densities are ??

I'm sure Bob doesn't agree and I'm positive he's not part of an elaborate scheme as he's spending cold hard cash (with local business) to get this scheme up.

My point was to not base a protest on hyped up incorrect information because the government agencies will disregard you as a bunch of ill informed tree huggers who turn up to every demonstration.

CMC - give the council a call and speak to someone in their economic development department. Ask them what would happen if tourism numbers started to decline and the development & construction industry stopped.

No offense intended Main. I'd also be offended if someone said I voted for Tate or Newman as well.

I'd guess you live North End? South of Burleigh we still believe we live somewhere beautiful.. Well we know actually.

You guys can have the terminal at your end... Wait, no that's a bad idea also, I attended that Rally also. Like Crispy said this is a divide an conquer idea to have the South End feeling like they won if it got put at the other end.

Actually that's kind of wrong too... The Terminal will never happen up there either, its impossible to get the ships in. They want us to get worked up about it so that they can say they listened to us and took away the Terminal, meanwhile they still develop Wavebreak and whatever other parts of the Broadwater they can give away to their party Election campaign donors.

These guys stink. QLD did not need to go back to the Sir Joh days with the whiteshoes and deals in brown paper bags running the state again..

P.S. This year was the biggest tourism year in a decade... Why? Casinos? Hotels?........ Noooo. Lower Aussie Dollar, ,more expensive for Aussies to travel o/s, cheaper for Internationals to come. We already have what they want and the Dollar will have a bigger affect than a crappy terminal that pollutes and ruins the natural environment already providing far more revenue and jobs than it will ever create.......

The people organising the Kirra marina fight are asking any body who can, and wants to, to go down and support Mick Fanning this Friday morning when he does an interview with the Today show about this project. Might be worth checking the show if you can't make it.

From the Save Our Southern Beaches Alliance FB page:

Come and join 3 times World Champ Mick Fanning this Friday 10th January at 6.15amQldtime in front of North Kirra Surf Club for the Today morning TV Show, we need as many supporters in the background and spreading the message about the Big Paddle Out for Sunday 19th January 10amQldtime@ North Kirra Surf Club. photo by Swilly aka Simon Williams in 2009.
