I'm 62yo surfing for 50yrs, 180cm (6ft) weigh 100kg & still surf fairly good & get out 3-4 time a week (if there's surf) . I'm after a new board & have been surfing as many sites like this & others, shapers sites yadda yadda & I gotta admit I'm phucked as to what board to get. No lemmie quantify that , I don't know which "new" tech board to go with, which is what I wanna try. Reckon I've narrrowed it down to a Firewire addvance 6'10" , Hayden Hypto & possible CI pod, same size. I want something that paddles well & that I can throw around a bit, as much as you can when you're surfing mainly east coast OZ waves (slop/mush). Any comments recommendation gratefully accepted. Don't gimmie any **** about "local shapers" , i've had so many customs (got 2 now) & I ain't gonna wait 4-6 weeks for another custom from the guys that are loosing work to overseas production!.

If you've been surfing 50 years, surf 3-4 times a week and still surf lower volume boards than jbshack surely you know more than any of us ... surely you have some sort of relationship with a few shapers and shops.

I could recommend a good shaper but you'd have to wait longer than 3-4 weeks, it would cost more than you're probably willing to spend, and you don't want a custom board anyway.

From your choice of username & this recent thread in the longboard room ( www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Surfing/Longboarding/Arise-sir-macaha/ ), I suspect this might be some kinda spinoff...but if your seriously chasing a board good in slush/mush. I'd recommend this for you http://www.sunovasurfboards.com/product/jr/
& if you think a longboard won't allow you to carve it up, I'll leave you with this vid of one of our local shredders surfing some slush who rides for Sunover

Yea Duke of Weariness it is as you sayeth I do cumalot, but only in my trusty shorts of board that hasth ever been built for such events. Yes & yes mine friend the most magnificent Earl of Miller doth create & supply most trusty & well enabled water craft for the disembowling of waves They do put a glint in the eye & make one charge the dragon of the water. Fear not the grail is close I can but see it....the search must continue.

Hi,

I've got a Firewire Addvance, its OK. I am 95 kgs and no longer a grommet and been surfing a long time. The Addvance paddles unbelievably well for 6'10 board and I can throw it around. However it is VERY corky, it doesn't feel good burying a rail or setting a rail in the steep stuff. For the small stuff, the tail is a bit narrow. I'm not sure I would get another one.

I don't think you will get a "magic" board for all conditions. I believe you need a couple of boards for different conditions when your at my stage of life and need as much help as you can get. I always take 2 with me in the car. This may not fit your budget and the Addvance would be an OK allrounder but I reckon you can do better.

I wont give you too much bull**** about local shapers, but that is where I have ended up after going the full "tech" journey with numerous boards from Firewire etc cost me a fortune, but I am now happy with what I got but it took a couple of goes from my local shaper.

Thanks for that Danelli, who'd of thought a straightforward answer on the breeze ,"hot damm uncle Jed". Yeah I normally travel with 3, local custom, boards in the van & then end up doing my head in as to which one to take out,LOL. Budget is not a problem I just wanted to try some new tech & see what it was like. suppose Ill just keep checking evilbay & see what I can pickup.

If you haven't tried the epoxy construction before it is worth giving it a go. It is a different feel and I reckon has some positives for small mushy waves. There is such a wide variety in models now but I prefer something with a wider tail than an Addvance for the smaller stuff, seems to generate more speed. If your near the Goldy, the Volcom BoardLab has a range of Firewires on special for around $500. I think there is some of the potato family boards there and I have some fun surfs on those. They will also let you demo a board.

It is fun trying em all.
