Just curious as to how many boards you have owned in a life time, I reckon in 40 years of surfing it is well over a hundred for me, when I have some spare time I will have to go down memory lane and have a bit of a count

Crikey, who knows......

I'd guess people will be able name the noted ones, the rest are just boards.

One thing I know though is no matter how many I get they all still come to the lounge room and get frothed over the same, I love new boards, I have had 100's of them and I get just a excited by each one. My wife does not understand. 'It looks like the other 10 in the garage!'

^^ I would love to see your collection of boards CMC, there would have to be some classics in there!!

I was thinking the same thing the other night, more thinking in the last 10 years tho but I do remember my first glass board, it was 6.0 single fin and it had a blue tint, the label was LaJolla and it was a pin tail. I wish I still had it

I wish I had my old mans Strapper single fin, 6'10 pin tail. That was the board I learnt on. I clearly remember 2 waves on it. One was catching the whitewater just after I started to go sideways in the wash rather than straight and it reformed into a green face. I felt like I went so fast. The other is the first time after I started catching open faced waves that I roller coasted up and down for speed. I was 10 and not very big so the 6'10 was huge for me. I been chasing that feeling of using the rails and carving rather than sliding around ever since.

Unfortunately Doggie my board collection has taken a beating in the last couple of years as I have bought racing SUP's, Canoes and paddles. I collect boards until i need stuff and then sell them off the 90% greats to pay for other stuff. I have my favourites and never let go's but apart from that I only have a 5'10 fish, 6'0 Carbon wrap, 6'2 80's, 6'3 fun shape, 6'5 Simon, 7'0 Bourton and my new 6'8 Single. Maybe only another 10 others under the house now. A few years ago there would have been 20-30.

I had two jet bottoms made from pipedreams,6'4" and 7'2", pederson was the guy who shaped them. Got them made in 90, fast and loose, got them made for J/bay, worked a treat.

At 18 I decided boards cost too much new and the return on them sucked if I sold them when they were still surfable and I would get some fun on them. As a result I still have every board I have ever owned bar the Cordingley single fin (but I think the tail was from another board) and an eight foot gun that I sold as I decided I wasn't man enough for it (a;though I am now considering a similar gun - lol). There are some funky things in the quiver: the Murray Smith twin fin has been copied by Tom Hoye and improved a fair bit with modern rails, a no volume rockered up Katana from the mid 90s, a rockerless Nev 7'8" pintail that I have caught my biggest waves on back in the day but now never pull it out as it doesn't have enough volume, boards I messed up as I thought I knew something about boards design and told a shaper or two how to do their job.

My all rounder has been a 6'6" for the last 17 years, but the volume has gone up a bit as I have moved from 23 and 70kgs to 40 and 88 kgs.

Total floating around? I think about 25 or 26. Most still surfable.

Ok Drip I think it's time you posted some photo's of your collection. I am sure lots of us here would love to see them. I know I would! I am sure you could dedicate a whole thread to your collection.

That's harsh, but I will bore you all if you want. I personally don't think photos are of that much interest as they don't show the subtle differences in width, thickness, rocker and bottom contours. I have bottoms that are almost flat, bottoms that are a pretty basic single into double, and bottoms that are a single into a flat into a double with a bit of vee running through the double and chines on the rail. None of this interesting stuff shows up in a photo but I will post a few in a day or two.

I might as well kick it in the guts although i am still
trying to compile a list of boards i have owned.
Found this photo at Xmas time as my mum always
drags out the old photo albums whenever i go there!
Thankfully the slide projector has disappeared.

A Hanimex (finless)foamy that gave you a death rash to compliment your sunburn,
but you could destroy a range of unwary swimmers in the flags,
and do endless 360's if you stood up and held both rails ,
(I see Derek Hynd has finally followed my lead ).
The first fibreglass and probably the favourite/most versatile board i ever owned,
courtesy of my cousin and his mates who were trying to destroy it
by throwing it off the cliff at Zenith beach near Port Stephens.
A 6'6 hot buttered single fin , (formerly 6'10 but my cousin remodelled
the tail and i would have to repair it on a monthly basis
as most under 8's glassing skills don't really cut the mustard and
it would continue to crack and cut my feet to pieces) .
I used to scrape the wax off around the hot buttered rainbow logo because that
was the only part of the board that wasn't brown or browning
The glass on that board just got harder and harder as it aged,
i had it for about 3 years and sold it for the princely sum of $10.
That board handled any size wave i rode over that period
and really was a magic board considering my size and weight at that time.
I am always reminded of it when i see anyone on TV being interviewed
and saying they have no regrets in life ..
"If only i had never sold the 6'6........

The other board is my elder brothers 6'10 McCoy
which looked great but went like a pig .........
My 6'6 whipped it in every aspect on a daily basis
or that might just be wishful thinking in the competition
that comes with having an older brother.
I haven't wrapped a legrope like that since my arm got long
enough to fit around a board
cheers (few more old shots to come !!)

Instant flashback to rigging the leggie like that and wrapping a towel around for padding and trudging down the rivermouth from the beach shack. Funny how an image can spark the memory banks like that. I can just about feel that chunky sharp bluemetal caning the feet.

I'm the same but i am a not a beast of change so the number is lower than most. Still would have to be up over 20ish though.

Having said that bought two more boards (second hand) on the weekend

1st board - probably <6' Foamie surfboard. Sold... outgrown.

1st fibreglass - 7'6 Rusty gun. ditto the foamie

1st short 'surfboard' - ~6' kneeboard (side of the road 'junk'). ditto, again.

upgraded shortboard - 6'4 rusty - exact board:
www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=199099563464687&set=a.194180817289895.38808.194180560623254&type=3&theater. old... already been snapped once before i bought it, on its last legs so i sold it for $70.

Longboard - 9'1 Thomson. great board. shame I snapped it.

another shortboard (normal shortys just dont cut it in summer) - 6'1 DHD Jellyfish - fantastic board. Still going strong after many years!

upgraded shortboard - 6'3 DHD D2 - great board, but perth's barely ever big enough to test its potential. Strong as ever.

another foamboard - 7' Prime. Snapped!

SUP - 9'1 Starboard Pro. another great buy.

another foamboard - 6' El Nino Flow. Feels flimsy, but joy in small waves.

Not bad for ~11 years in the water me thinks!

I figured it out by making a list of what shapers I got boards off of and counting how many I got off of each, it ended up heaps less of what I thought , 20 shapers, about 85 boards over 40 years, I did not include my sup..And plus 2 borrowed boards that I had to buy when I broke them.
