Seems to be more to the story but good on the locals for taking on the big guys. Love the quote 'The ASP needs the North Shore but the North Shore does not need the ASP'.
Name changes aside, how much tourism dollar has ASP bought to the north shore? And the Hawaiian surf industry in general? Life's not perfect and I can tell you the da hui aren't either.. As a majority their a bunch of muscled up thugs... Any other sport, tennis, car racing, whatever you don't see the locals flaring up talking about throwing punches because their 'boys' didn't get a start when the show rolled into town... You want a start then you earn a start like everyone else... Pull the final stop from the north shore and take it to another, equally challenging location(without a major ice problem) and see the difference in local, sustainable economic windfall... The world tour is an amazing event still, at most, run by surfers and any country should be stoked to be a part of it......
I guess the issue is that many of the locals around the Northshore, don't really want all the tourism TBH. An interesting point i read was this "The ASP needs the Northshore, The Nortshore, doesn't need the ASP"
Believe it or not, most of the paying tourists in Hawaii/Northshore, are people who have traveled from land locked countries and they are seeing the ocean for the first time.

Bull shart the north shore doesn't need the asp.. Maybe for the local surfers its a pain but I'm sure the shop owners and local resturaunts and anyone that relies on tourism would be singing another tune entirely... Lives outside of surfing would have been built on the back of professional surfing, not to mention the ones directly connected... Taking the da huis opinion of what's good for everyone on the north shore is akin to listening to bikies opinions for the Gold Coast...
My point is that many of the surf tourist are back packers, people on long term holidays and for the Northshore, they don't spend up that big. Maybe at the Food stores and bottle shops. Im not saying it doesn't contribute, but their is a lot more on offer. In fact the events on the Northshore block the highway for miles each direction, basically shutting down the local (Big) tourist trade. Buss's after buss's of people stopping at random spots to look at the water. I actually one day stopped, got out and walked over to see at one place just what it was i was missing, only to be told its just the sea
The que's for anything were actually normally thanks to Trip Advisor. At eat out food vans, fruit stalls, hiking, and shops listed on the Tourist tours. Take shaved Ice for instance. I really like one guy who had a little van right outside Sharks cove, but he never had a que. In Haleiwa the shaved ice spot never had a que, but the Montorsory ice two doors down, would have a 30 minute que, for the same product. Thanks to Trip advisor..
Every restaurant you have to wait for at least 30 minutes if you get their after 5;30 to be seated.
Many business actually have signs on the counter, 15% discount for locals or Service man (Army/Navy/Airforce). Early on I took offence at one shop, so if I'm a tourist i pay extra? YES why not..was the answer.
Id say many of the Pro Surfers and local surfers WOULD want Hawaiian events, as it gives them a bump up, but in all, the Community doesn't need the ASP..
The South side, Waikiki , a totally different story, but it may as well be another continent away for many that side of the island. As they say in the North Shore "KEEP THE COUNTRY COUNTRY". You will see that everywhere..
Im just saying it as i saw it, I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with the Huai and their law suit
Oh and i was only their on the Shoulder season..I wouldn't want to visit in the Peak would be way to many Tourists.
Edit: I guess a comparison would be to Say Margaret River needs the ASP and pro surf events..
