So I'm sure there are a few other crew out there who are cutting foam in the backyard and want to share some ideas and experiences. Here are a couple of mine to get it started.

one more just for good measure....this one is a 5'10 arc tail swallow quad....goes great!

Nothing better than riding on something you have built, makes you appreciate the time and effort that goes into a well shaped and finished board. I also enjoy building something a little non main stream.

i am in the planning stage of making a short board but am going to chamber it!
so i am looking at pawlonia cheaper (local supplier)or preferably balsa expensive
couple of questions?
weight of the short board 6'6 and how does it go?
type of wood you were using ?
and would you use a different type in hindsight
vacumn bag....... home job or professional
any process/area you thought "sh8t i should of done that before that "!

Timber used was Palownia and western red cedar and a bit of balsa in the vac bagged job. The Palownia is a great timber to work with and I would use that over balsa if you have the choice.

The 6'6" came out at ~ 6kgs. so heavier than a normal board for sure. It goes great luv riding it and have ridden it from knee high to 1.5 to 2 x OH, gets a bit sketchy from 1.5 OH but then I not the greatest surfer going either

Vacumm bag was done with an old fridge compressor, plastic from bunnings and lots of tape so very home jobby...

Yeah heaps of little things learnt on the way but realy nothing that cant be fixed, the only ones that come to mind are to make sure you clean everything from the inside of the hollows as I have a couple of rattles from bits of timber left inside. I also used a 12" spacing on the cross members on the 6'6" and had a bit of cracking on the deck around so on the other boards I have reduced that to 6-8" spacing under the feet/chest area and used a extra patch of glass.

Yep 4 x MR's but I am a big bugger (115 kgs) and thats a fat tail 17" pin to pin I think. I can still slide the board out... But overhead height its to much fin or probally to much tail area, it gets to much speed and the board gets to fast and drivey (for me to handle anyway) if that makes any sense?

I built this one for Perth metro beach breaks its fat at 23" and only 2" thick and carrys the thickness thru the nose to tail. Put a fair bit of rocker in it for beach breaks. I should have thinned the tail out and shaved 1.5 inches of the width. Still a fun board to ride on the right waves and the groms use it more than me now.

Nice thread fellas and some great looking home builds there. I finally pick up my blank for my first attempt tom. Very excited. Will post some pics once some progress has been made.

How are yr builds going? I have finally started on mine the other week and are loving it. Thought I would start with a longboard - more room for error first time around.

I just finished a new potato chip ready for glassing, I'll take some photos today, this one is an asymetrical that I just cut. 6'2" keel fish on the toe side (natural footer), 5'8" rounded square quad on the heels.

Also a couple of the handplanes I make every summer. I get broken boards, rip the glass off them and cut and shape them into handplanes! its a bit of work but its fun when the whole crew come out for a body surf with them on and its good practice for glassing!

Dropped a roll of tape on it tonight, and the bloody cat keeps slinking past with more than curiosity. I suspect it'll have some more character by morning.

And if that bloody tomcat comes around tonight it'll have scent as well!!!

Spray is a bit patchy. Best I can expect from spray cans.

Got some colour in the resin when I laminated it too.

Lammed the bottom this morning but the temp rose too quickly to do the deck. I'll do it tomorrow I hope.
Would have liked to get a filler on it before I go to work, but will have to hope that the wind, tomcat etc leave it alone.
