So i went out on Wednesday with my board 6'4" fatty style board and as i got to the water dropped it and snapped a fin. So napped the opposite fin of and went out single fin. At shoulder high it was a bit slippery and had no direction at all but i guessed it would be suss.

So next morning rushed to my local shop (northern Surf) and grabbed a set of M7's
Originally the board had i think the cheapest fins they could have fitted. g5's i think.

My question is this. I always felt the board was a little slow on the wave and not as responsive. (bit of a pig) so ideas on fins please. I now have a FCS sheet and was thinking the Occy XL looks like the go. More drive (speed i think) and more suited to my petite frame of 100 kilos?

Can anyone help with some useful advice.

Board is a H-Bomb 6'4"

M7s are similar size to the Occys, the next size up is the Sunny Garcia fins. At your weight I recon these are the ones to go for imo. If you need to loosen it up use the G5 centre fin with the M7 sides. This will free up the tail a bit for you

Where are you located? I have a shoe box full of fins if you live close, that you can take for a spin

According to my sheet the Sunny and the Occy are the same size. Just the Occy gives more drive. Is drive more pace, IE less slow and piggy or is it just my size and age that has slowed me over the years?

Doggie i'm up in Mindarie . Thanks for the offer but i will maybe just play around a little on the M7's and keep an eye out on Ebay. I see some Occy's cheap at the moment

I like the idea of the smaller rear fin..Will give that a go as i still have the G5.

Hey buddy try indofins.net
Fins are glass fcs copies of just about anything/size/style u want. I got a set of 5 H2 style ( thruster/quad set up $51.) CHEAP and they work good. You could have a crack at H2 large

Some bugger stole my Occys (like I need more fins)

Yep I recon do that M7 side G5 rear/centre, you will be amazed how much difference that will make. M7s have the inside foil as well and that will make it looser as well.

I just had a look at that board, you can set that up as a quad!! Get some GX--Q rear set with the M7s and you are done!!!! For big boards like that I recon a quad set up is the way to go!

I was in QLD recently and I borrowed a 6,8 7S fish. First surf on it it was set up as a thruster, it went okish but didnt start any fires. Next day I took the centre fin out and put in some rear quad fins, the difference was chalk and cheese. The quad was miles better, faster and looser!!

Go the quad imo

Mine i picked up cheap and guess what the next year's model has both.. Mine is just a Thruster set up. I toyed with the idea of quads but being a crreature of habit went a thruster.

The board i really liked was double the price and i was going to change for it soon but really want a --P now so will have to wait.

MR twins and a little stabilizer fin Rod. I'm a big unit like you (110kg) and this gives me heaps of drive. Although I too ride a quad set up, fast and loose but holds in. Bear in mind I'm a kneelo though.

just mix it up a bit, try different combos and see what works for you

What about the winged keel for the rear fin. I was looking at that last night and don't mind that idea at all either. I have gone with Doogies idea the 5 in middle and 7's on side and hopefully will get out this afternoon. Last night was a bit too messy for my liking so went riding instead.

Mate used one of these for a long time... but his last two boards have been quads so not for over 12 months. I never rode it, but he used to rate it - particularly for giving a better hold...

I like ultimate drive sometimes. I usually run a 6.5 inch fin in the box, plus full size Large Merricks fins on the side of this one..... Alot of fin! (and fun!) It sometimes starts to stall at the end of a big drawn out Round House, but you end up high on the foam, and pretty easily make it back down the bottom for more speed.

Went out yesterday arvo for a quickie at Mulla's and it was like black and white the difference. I can't believe the change it made.

M7's on side and the 5 in the rear. Waves had no issue running my weight and actually found jumping from one wave and linking over onto other's for extended ride..Very happy guys thanks for the input.

I worked for FCS for quite a while and when they changed from the old yellow ones to the new black ones we either threw them out or kept them, I kept a couple!

I filled them over time of working in surf shops, board builders and then with my product allowance with FCS. I have far less now than before. I'll try to get a snap for you.

That would be an expensive test. I dont think you would feel that much difference.
Maybe a bit more drive, but not that much. The UL series are not as stiff as PC5 or PG5s imo.

The best descriptions are on the FCS website, but generally stiffer fins (not too stiff) will give more drive because they dont flex as much, less flex more drive ect ect.

Any lighter guys out there who have had some success with different fin types. I am still using the standard black plastic jobbies. Have been a little brainwashed from a mate down south who rekons his board handles in a much better way with his K3 fins he paid $100 odd for.

Hes not the type at all to buy a product based on "brand" and usually surfs on old sticks that look average but work

He surfs regularly enough and on quality waves so wouldnt doubt him.

Just a bit unsure if the k3 fin would be suited to me being 20kg lighter

I weigh 68kg and ride a 6'3 shortboard in 2-5 foot

Thanks

K3s are good but have a smaller center/rear fin so it will be looser, if you do use them and they are too loose use an M5 rear/center fin and that should calm them down a bit.

Thanks doggie.

Was thinkn about going to the smaller k2. You rekon thats to small? and was hoping to go with a stiffer fin i think those black ones have way to much flex.

Has anyone tried any one particular fin shape in different materials and noticed any changes?

Thanks

Try the PC3s, my mate is your size and he generally uses them in bigger waves. Performace Core (PC) is alot stiffer than the old black fins and will give more positive drive

Yea I dont think the smaller K2s would do the job but in saying that, its only my opinion.
