Hawaii

Has anybody got any tips for which Islands to go and if I need to take a board, or can you grab something over there.
Looking at cruise holiday with my Lady, but hopefully get a few surfs. Cruisy waves nothing too challenging.

There are boards aplenty on the north shore. Could be pricey for an haole like you though, brah
And it doesn't sound like you want to surf there, but what a spectacle!

I understand Maui is pretty cruisey.

We did Oahu and Hawaii in late May-mid June this year. I did not surf on the North shore as it was big and had a side-shore hitting it, so just happy to sit on the beach at Pipe and watch. You can hire boards all over the place. The surf on the Kona side of Hawaii was also good, but the swell was big and a lot of their beaches are sharp volcanic rock, so I gave it a miss... I did surf out at Canoe's in Waikiki for the last four days and had a blast on a 10ft thruster! It can be crowded, but half the people cannot surf and are just out there on holidays... the locals are used to the tourists so as long as you show some respect and wait your turn they will call you in to waves... I got a bag full each day and had a ball - shoulder to head high rollers with faster inside sections running for up to 150m... Board hire $10 for 2hrs. And you can surf from 6:00am to 7:00pm - it's off shore all day at that time of year in Waikiki. I'm going back in 2019 - this time Oahu and Maui. Don't forget to take your snorkelling gear - it's just amazing. Oh and the Kona Brewery Fire Rock beer is pretty good too!!

Thanks Guys,
Really appreciate the info.
I am a bit past trying to prove anything on the North Shore, spectator sport only. But if it's on I want to see it.
Sounds like Waikiki will be on the list. If I can get a few days in and then do the sightseeing trip and gather info etc for next time as well.

All I've spoken to about Hawaii have had good reports, so keen to get there and have a look.
Thanks again.

There are loads of great breaks on the north shore still to consider.I was their for three years back and was present for the first big winter swell event. I still surfed everyday and had a blast. No not Pipe or sunset or Waimea bay, they were pure spectacle, but some really fun waves like Leftovers, (we had a house at this break) Chuns, Haleiwa town beach. Didn't surf Turtle Bay beach, and still so much more to consider..

I'll be over there Jan 2019. Prob take two boards over in a triple board coffin bag and buy more if needed.

Have heard thats a nice shoulder season for the north shore, but doubt the big name breaks get quiet unless over triple head.

Let us know how you go mate

Just as busy when its big. We watched Pipe when the third reef was starting to break with about 30 guys out. Seemed to be the same three or so surfers though getting all the waves

I went to Oahu and Maui in September unreal! I picked up a virtually brand new Chilli Miami Spice from the surf shop in Paia Town, Maui for $300. I would recommend taking fins and a leggy if you want to save some $ but still want to buy a board. Cost me $25 to get it back to Perth.
On Maui, try surfing Dumps down in Makena and Ho'okipa on the north shore (If its not too big). If your headed to Oahu first there is the Haliewa surf shop that does heaps of second hand boards for about $90 and up. North shore is great surf, but you need to be fit. I surfed Chuns and Pipe. Chuns is a great cruisy wave, locals are cool so long as your respectful. Pipeline is nuts... Waikkiki is a great wave, agree with GPA that most out there are just out there on holidays, most locals are out at Queens anyways.
