Ok guys so i crashed and burned, hope you enjoyed the show...ha ha

Fortunately it wasn't paid for by the countries taxpayers, so rest easy, but i did score a few good stories out of the trip, some great happy snaps and epic surf.

True, Africa ain't for everyone, due to some hostility and a bit of discrimination but hey, I'd say it was at least worth the effort.

Hopefully once i work up enough cash i shall finish what i've started, going form Morocco down south this time and meeting up with where i was deported this time...

Ideally the encouragement is hoped to outweigh the negativity this time but i guess we don't all like an adventure and must make a comment...

For those who do however, I'd love to hear feedback on anyone who has travelled/surfed Africa and your own loves, hates and stories/suggestions.

have a look here for what went down... http://thumbsupafrica.net/mozzies-blog/

PS. heres the old post if your a little confused...

Mate for what it's worth you didn't deserve any of the crap in that other thread.

You made one post, approved by Laurie (not spruiking a random web site) and immmediately some guy p!sses on your dream because you aren't the first in the entire world to do it. And despite current conditions it was obviously way more hardcore a hundred years ago. Your response was fair enough, but then you apologised anyway so they should have let it go at that.

The other 3 pages were a bit of a shameful example of the pack mentality that runs in some areas, particularly with some of the surfers on here I've noticed. As soon as one is under attack the others all have to jump in and defend at all costs, then carry it on for a few hundred posts to reassure themselves that they won.

I reckon you did well and had a great adventure getting as far as you did and back safely. Good luck next time.

+ 1

24 days in jail in Africa is not something I would fancy. Well done for staying sane!

Best of luck with your next effort. Morocco has some great waves around the Anchor Point area which you are probably familiar with so I will not bore you with the details but rest assured there are some very good ones!! Make sure you do not go until after Sept - before that the Atlantic is flat.

upon reviewing the aforementioned thread it seems that much of what was predicted came true, some advice was offered and seemingly ignored. KiteBoy Dave, I thank you for your insightful comments but have to say that upon review (apart from some comments e.g. SurferStu) I think this guy showed some disrespect early on in the thread and copped a barrage of correctional themed constructive criticism, that's life isn't it

Bakesy the way I read it you were 3rd in line to give him a kick and you came back for one more. So I guess you're gonna say he deserved it. From my reading only 1 guy offered any real advice.

He definitely overreacted in the first reply but it didn't deserve a barrage of hate and scorn - particularly after he apologised and agreed he did bad.

For what it's worth I've been to southern africa 4 or 5 times, been lost, stranded, bogged, hitched, been on all sorts of local buses, and had a ball the whole time. So maybe I'm biased but I love the area and reading about guys doing it the hard way. Got a few stories of my own. I've not been north of zim or namibia though.

my real issue was the blog promotion, this stuff annoys me, whatever happened to telling everyone where you're going, then going somewhere else due to a whim, a few phone calls home, a postcard or two and then returning to provide vague details to your mates at the pub? This cultural trend to broadcast every thought and experience you have has some benefits but it seems those fews days after you or your mates have done some travel and returned home to recall seedy stories of your escapades have gone, we've seen everything on a blog or FB,Twitter or Youtube there is nothing left to reveal. I must admit Mozzie can express himself and the hell he went through was revealed through his blog, I enjoyed reading it and feel that his story was worth telling.

Just a couple of things
You said Africa isn't for everyone
Well I think it it is. Just not the countries coming in or out of a civil war
You also said that the people who took the piss the first time around weren't up for an adventure and must make a comment
I guarantee most have spent more time abroad than you and a lot of the older crew on the breeze have laid the foundations for babysat surf travel trips today
It's just that most have families to look after these days. They'd have there fair share of epic waves and stories from years gone by
And for the record I have spent about a year in Africa and the travel advice given in some of the countries there is there for a reason. I wouldn't be booking a trip to Sierra Leone and expect positive comments
I dont think anyone cares enough to say "I told you so" but if you expected a different outcome to the trip then that's just plain ignorance.
It's Africa and things get dealt with the African way
