Hey its all about being a water man. There's nothing wrong with a surfer owning a SUP for those smaller days or to mix things up a bit.

Slater and Occy have spent more than enough time in the water to know how not to be a danger to themselves and everybody else in the water.

A surfer on a SUP is a totally different creature to the SUPKOOK who has come straight from the golf course or the bicycle lycra brigade.

I saw an interview with Occy n his kid years ago - he was riding a 666 then so its nothing new for him.

I have 3 shortboards, 2 mals and 2 SUPs, whatever gets you on the water having the most fun IMO.... I have to laugh watching shortboarders flap around getting nothing while I have a ball picking up small slop on my SUPs

I have heard the same old reasons trotted out that people buy them for tiny surf, outer reefs, an empty bank or patch of reef down the beach, bravo to those that actually Use them for that purpose. Maybe it's different where you surf but from what I have observed they can cause major carnage when out of control, let me tell you it doesn't tickle when one hits you in the middle of the back. The reality is that they get used in crowded surf, and there are some that use them purely to be wave pigs.

I agree that unless you are very very experienced and capable you should stay away from the crowded points. I'm very capable and experienced on surfing SUP but still stay clear of crowds and points but find that surfers flock around me when they see me picking up wave after wave.. It comes down to having the right board for your ability and the conditions....and common sense no matter what craft you are in the water with....

Oh yeah! Glad some people recognise this. From someone who has a prone/ski/bodyboard/body surfing background that is hoping that Im not seen as one of the aforementioned latte sipper sup-pers!

How interesting. I find that if I go surfing by myself somewhere with easy access for viewing if I'm catching a few waves it's only a matter of time before people flock to join me.
Nevermind the fact that a ton of people had already checked it and drove away.
The only reason I'd go out is that there's no one out but when they sprint down the beach to paddle out for a cuddle I can't get out quick enough

The biggest point i'm trying to make is that most problems arise when guys are surfing the wrong board for the conditions and their ability. I surf pretty much every size craft as i want to spend max time in the water. When its sucky and pumping the shortys come out, clean and spilling the LB and small and full the SUP....The problem is narrow minded idiots that only want to surf 1 style of board no matter the conditions and then complain about others who have the right equipment for taking all the waves. Every one has a board/style preference but if the conditions don't suit what you have, either get another craft, don't complain or stay out of the water!

Before someone jumps down your throat when they misread your comment about "idiots".... I know you mean those that complain about others getting the waves - not that they choose to specialize with a particular board/craft - for that is a legitimate ethos, and in some ways quite admirable. I say that.. cause many of my contemporaries have been surfing the same one type of board for all their lives... and I have to say.. they certainly have superior skills on that (insert type of board here) as a result. I like variety - but you know, as they say: "Jack of all trades - master of none!"

We don't get much swell where i live hence the increasing popularity with SUP....The 'idiots" are the guys that paddle around on short boards when the conditions are just rideable for SUP and then crack it when the don't get any waves (wrong board for the conditions)...As i've said before i'm very capable on surf SUP in most conditions but if a point is pumping i'd stay well away from it as i would cop abuse and IMO rightly so

You got to remember that some people are just not intetested in sup
I'm sure there are perfect conditions for it and some peoples self righteousness would have them compete for scraps with people whose boards maybe aren't suited at that particular time
But you can't knock people who show no interest in sup
In my perfect world not many people would be interested in surfing
In reality that's not the case, But that's just the way it is.

Im not knocking people who arnt into SUP, just don't complain when your on a shortboard and I'm getting 5 waves to your 1 on my 8 foot SUP

But add any other persons in a sup's area and the practicality goes straight out the window. The possibilities for carnage is endless
Every sup rider should know this and they should all do the right thing if the lineup gets populated

I saw Occy and Luke Egan on SUPs in 2006 at snapper ....and Occy was doing some dropping in !!

In his biography out in 2010 (I think) Occy mentions SUP'ing a few times.

I'm with you when saying "sups just need to take care when there are others around". By this can mean that all SUP have beginner level with no experience of all risks which can occur to people surrounding them... or simply hassling people around. This is not enough to put every one holding a paddle in the same section. Because out of those dangerous or embarrassing big boards as i agreed it a few of those SUPers just improve their surfing level using a paddle.
As me if you like so much surfing as i do and you want to find back some unforgettable memories of success you got when did start surfing and may be you don't have anymore progression as proned surfer, just try surfing with a paddle. It will take you some long sessions with daily success to reach the level as you do now with a shortboard, but some much new fun indeed. Plus there will be less non surfers coming to SUP , it will keep surfing spots out of messy standing up paddling crowd. In brief, SUP need you surfer

I don't blame people for getting annoyed at SUPers causing a danger to water users. The same for complaining about the Surf skiers & Mal riders. The same arguements pop up when someone has a bad experience with one of them.
In my opinion all water craft from surfboards & up can cause serious injury by irresponsible users & of course an unintentional accident.
Unfortunately it is those very few irresponsible people that cause the damage & concerns in the surf & they just don't get it.
As a prone board rider to a SUPer I can understand both parties.
In my view it is basically the biggest craft user that should give way to the rest. But that doesn't mean to those other smaller craft wave hogs that have to catch every wave possible no matter what! But how do you tell them with out getting your nose snotted? Lol!
Basically I try to surf away from the group of prone surfers or to the outside of the pack & pick off the waves they miss. Or get the occasional big set that I can see coming before they do. Usually the waves that break further out that I know are going to wipe over the top of them. That is I can get out quicker to those waves with a SUP.
Since I have been SUPing for three years I have only had one single complaint when a prone surfer shook his head at me when I got out to the break he was surfing which was away from the main pack of short boarders. I asked what his problem was. His complaint to me was that he was going to miss out because I was going to catch all his waves. I assured him to surf as normal & I would give way to him. I was not there to spoil his day. Then he remembered me from a previous surfing session & he apologised. So we had another good surf session.
A bit of respect for each other goes a long way.
If we all surfed as though we were best mates, then it wouldn't matter what surf craft we use.
By the way I SUP surf with my close short boarder relatives & we never have had a problem with each other. So it just shows it can be done to share & be responsible.
And if you are the one receiving numerous complaints & arguements from others no matter what surf craft you are using, then you may want to take another good look at yourself & work out why?
And to that idiot that fell off his Mal that nearly hit me because you weren't wearing a leash when I was SUPing, "Grow a brain & surf on your own somewhere else!!" Lol!
It happens.

As a purist short boarder for 30 years I eventually found I got too fat to float in small waves so I started riding fish boards.

I then thought it would be fun to surf in the arvos when the summer winds got up and added a kite to my short board and became a keen kitesurfer.

As a vocal anti-SUPper I shocked all my mates when I announced I just bought a SUP to surf those clean ankle to waist high waves through winter.

Ive got about ten 6'2 s sitting in the board rack gathering dust at the moment as I hardly ever get to ride them anymore unless I go on a surf trip.

Ive told my kids to shoot me if I ever rock up at home with a longboard

I reckon some people can SUP better than most people can surf
