Hi, apologies if this question has been asked a hundred times, couldnt find anything via a quick search.. Anyhoo, I've been surfing a 7'6" performance mini-mal for the last 5 years and have just bought a new 6'8" shortboard. I'm 6'4" 95kg, 45yo and have been surfing for 30+ years.
I've been really happy with the new board in smaller - mid size waves but we scored some great waves earlier this week and in bigger surf the standard fins (FCS G-5?) which came with the shortboard are losing grip in hard bottom turns (especially on my backhand).
So, I'm after recommendations on bigger fins which will suit a bigger guy who wants maximum hold in bigger conditions. Obviously FCS make dozens of different syles, I'm not taken by any particular models/just want an idea what size and characteristics I should be looking for?
Any help would be great, before i hit up my local surf shop. Thanks
Davey, I almost mirror your dimensions and have used a combo of diff fins
M7s, Powerbase XL (same template as 7s) Surf eclipse (fcs copies) H7s and Kelly Slater 2
I ride a 6'2 quad and a 6'4 thruster all of those combos worked (KS 2s best in thruster - bigger side fin and smaller centre fin) and in my quad im loving the Stretch 4s
I was suffering from the same problem - M5's just don't get enough hold in decent waves. The Merrick FCS G-AMS work really well for me. heaps more drive and really good hold
