Anyone think the whole 150 buck fin thing is a sham. Have tried the 150 performance fcs and compared to the 60 buck glass flex fcs and the cheapies actually seemed better.

Flex can be the biz.

Huge sham.... I run 30 buckers from a shop that can't be named here for pimping reasons and I can't tell the difference.... Your paying for a name.... The boxes however do make a difference... Quality boxes last longer and the grub screws don't seem to strip or rust....

Its the pretty coloured ones that suck me in.

I dont think I have ever paid $150 for a set ever!!

Saying that I havnt bought any fins for a while.

I just use what ever I have lying around. I've cannibalised the fins off all my broken boards and have quite the stock pile
I don't think I'm quite at a performance level where I'm going to notice all that much in the different sets of fins I have.

I'm not good enough to tell the difference.

However there's certainly flex differences between the 30 buck plastics and the more expensive.

Surely the glass fins are the go. Stiff and not as exxy as the super light ones.

I got a mate that I swear just loves collecting them, quite a good surfer and has been known to go in and change the fins halfway through a surf ha ha. Spends heaps on them as well!

I just use the fins that come with the board ha ha

I'm after a set of larger/stiffer fins as my current medium sized plastic jobbies just aren't holding in bigger turns/waves. might give the ebay cheapies a go first before shelling out $150 on brand name . Any recommendations for cheaper options?

I've been using wood ones for a while. Bamboo for a couple of years but that supply dried up. New ones are balsa with bamboo stringers and carbon fibre reinforcement. US$120 shipped.

$150 set of fins i could find are only m funning's. is that it ?

i never tried and would never buy any pro's signature or sea shepherd fins etc.
don't want to support their lifestyle.

Neither, different system.

My last set of fins cost me $100 for a 6 fin set. Quad, thruster and a Nubster..

Actually have somehow managed to get a few set's more than i need. Considered selling a few as they are just driving around in the car, but cant really decide..

I might do a stock take..

Well, some of their boxes do, but who cares? Their system is 100x better than FCS. Just doesn't have the Macquarie Bank marketing power.

Fins fit in a tapered box, so they tighten down to fully rigid (no wobbling). Screw is a stainless screw in stainless threads. You crank it down with a big flathead screwdriver, hard. No stripping, ever. Box is an oval flange, so strong under glass. Fin is held down by a metal tab, which will in theory bend out of the way to release the fin when you hit reef so the box doesn't rip out. I have bent metal tabs over time from cranking the screw down too hard. Just flip them or hammer them flat and all good. Fins have some adjustability, forward and back.

Issues are marketing (they're dying a slow death). Fin availability (need to search). Harder for dumbarse shapers to install (need a multilevel route, not just a holesaw). Fins are harder to remove. Once you crank the screw down they're really in there due to the taper. There's a technique to removing.

But it's a great system. Shame it's dying.

FCS is stupid, but they overwhelm the opposition. It'll take Kelly to market an alternative. Who knows, with CI moving to Futures ...

Davey, Is it for a shortie?? if so check out Gas fins, I think you can still get em just down the road from you in coolum, at blue lines?? on the corner across the road from the surf club. If not give the guys down at Kawana a buzz. Can't remember the name of the place but Beck is shaping out of there, and they stock em. Think its it Production Ave Kawana.

FCS isnt stupid. CI isnt just using Futures, if they did they would go broke!

I think the new snap in system will the goods imo.
