What are peoples thoughts or knowledge on surfing in Fiji. Is there much point to take a surf board to Fiji if you are there while the pro is on?

Maybe the question should be will there be a wave that won't be crowded with the best surfers from everywhere? Boards going as it has already got a ticket

Heaps of waves in Fiji bro. The pros will be gathered in and around 2 spots only which leaves you with a couple of hundred other ones to play on.

Can anybody recommend from experience an area of Fiji that has a few beachies that the kids could surf (3ft), but also has easy access to some bigger options. I say beachies as I'm not sure how comfortable the wife would be about the nippers surfing over reef in unknown waves.

Thanks

Check out posts from Piros in the 666 room - he has a mate on the Coral Coast that might be just the ticket for you.

Cheers Ted the Kiwi. We will be on Plantation island so I take it there is plenty around that area. Swell forecast is looking good for big Cloudbreak so looking forward to a bit of viewing and giving the camera a good workout.

Hi EB,

New here first post to this forum.

From Plantation you should be able to get a boat to Wilkes Passage, Nomotu Lefts and on to Cloudbreak from Nomotu. A bloke called Big John used to come past every morning and pick up guests but he's since passed (some time ago..) and last I heard his son was now doing it.

Salty Sea Dog, on the mainland it would be worth a trip to Natadola beach, there's a small reef break there (left hander) and a little beach break as well, really nice spot but needs a lot of swell, you can also get a boat to the outer reef from here which is much bigger. Further down the coast is Sigatoka River Mouth (beach break), ugly black beach, brown water..which picks up similar sized swell to cloud break so can get sketchy with rips and huge closeouts. If you find it, make sure you stay friendly and introduce yourself to the locals at the end of the road and don't leave valuables in the car..Rumor has it there's a break not far from here that has been likened to Puerto Escondido..

If you're heading down the Coral Coast there are plenty of other options away from the crowds, Frigates Passage would be my pick for quality, you'll need a charter boat to get there and it can get heavy if it's big so maybe leave the kids at home. Waidroka Resort is the go to place on this coast.

Yeww! Jay Davies in the pro! as announced on WSL this morning

The injury list for the 2015 Fiji Pro just got longer. Brett Simpson (USA) has withdrawn from the event due to injury sustained at Huntington Beach, while John John Florence (HAW) withdrew after rolling his ankle in Brazil.Simpson's spot will go to Jay Davies (AUS), while there are Florence will be replaced by one of three surfers, depending on availability: Tomas Hermes (BRA), Aritz Aranburu (ESP) or Garrett Parkes (AUS). The three were next in line on the 2014 QS end-of-year rankings, next in line on the 2014 CT end-of-year rankings and next in line on the 2014 QS end-of-year rankings respectively (QS, CT, QS). Davies was selected by the WSL Commissioner's Office for his outstanding performance at the 2015 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro.

Awesome to see Jay getting the nod.

Would love to see Jack Robbo get a gong as well, some of the vids i've seen of his recent trip to cloudbreak are off the hook!
