Water temp is already on the rise, I think we might see some more

Am i wrong as i feel its better if its a Tiger. They seem to be in water everywhere up north with all the eco tourists? So isn't that a good thing, less aggressive? Than a white or Bull shark at least..

I was a little complex ed the other day when surfing with my young fella and he asked about sharks after seeing all the press and hype so i thought it only fair to educate them better. I talked them both threw it all and what can happen. We even watched a show about victims re telling there story. (pretty graphic and my wife hit the roof) but i then showed them some more info on positive stuff.

Both kids now fully understand the risk (as best as they can at 7 and 10) and are still very happy to live in the water. As i said my kids live in the ocean swimming at Rotto to and from boats/shore and moorings, surfing and snorkeling so i believed they needed the truth.. Has anyone else talked it over with there kids?

youll probably find the photo with the article is a file photo. I dont think the fisherman were fishing from a helicopter...

Therefore, I wouldnt be basing species identification by this pic...plus the average journo (choosing the pic) wouldnt have a clue the differences between the two sharks. ie posting a pic of a white pointer.

Shark sighted is a most likely a white pointer (as the fishos said) - its that time of year and I would say the water is still a little cold for the tigers...?

Judging by the photo it looks to be a tiger. Other than the shape of the head, it's the tail that gives it away.
GWS are thunniform, which means that the tail is symetrical...or close to it.
Judging by the photo the tail doesn't look symetrical (although water refraction could be to blame) which matches the Tiger Shark as they are subcarangiform...if you want to get technical

It does feel a little early for Tiger Sharks to be coming down but hey, the LC keeps the water pretty warm around here and stranger things have happened.

Having said all that, the media being the media, it's probably a generic photo out of a database. Watervis seams to good

I've always wondered if shark shields draw sharks in and then keep them at bay. I'm sure research has been done on this, but I'd imagine the sharks detect the shark shield from some distance and come in to see what the hell it is...then thankfully, are kept at a distance haha.

That wouldnt be the first or last big noah seen in that part of the sound, I grew up down that way and always heard about the odd big bugger holding up. Wasnt there a big Tiger caught off Woodys this year already?

I cant help but think that if there was not such hype about a shark sighting the media would not give it as much airtime? Obvious thing to say but its true.

It's just about snapper spawning season in the sound. Shark's just arriving at the party early.

Yep that's what they do. The electrical current emitted through the water gets them investigating but when within range it deters them. That said, shark shield themselves say if a shark like a GWS has made up it's mind and is on the attack run then it ain't going to help.

A guy here at work who is into his diving, said there is a big 5m female that does a triangle from rotto to scarbs to cockburn sound back to rotto.

Apparently on a couple of occasions the divers have been circled by her and then she pisses off.
They have only encountered it when they were on the bottom and not doing the 5m deco stop.

Should probably tag her and see where she goes. I've always been under the opinion she just hangs around South/West off Rotto.
