Hey, has anyone used the esds (electronic shark defence system)? Is it worth getting? Cons? Pros? Thoughts?
Cheers

dont think they work to good mate as the probes are to close together meaning the electric field in the water to small. Current flows between probes. sounds good looks good but prob to good to be true.

Heaps of sharks up there. I have been using one for about three months. I find after a few surfs you dont know you are wearing one. I also use a shark shield on some of my bigger boards. The shark shield is a lot stronger and send the electronic field out further but is a bit restricting. I find the esds needs to be fully charged before you surf. They take ages to charge but you can leave them on the charger the whole time and it doesnt effect the battery. CSIRO is SA did a similar range of testing and the results where placed on the forum. They indicated a similar result however stated that the amount of burley neeeded to attrack the sharks to the test zone would have an impact on the way the shark approached the area. It seemed plenty of sharks had a sniff and pissed off. just the hammer head had a nibble. Maybe he is one of those blokes that likes his tucker with a bit of spice.

ok current flows in the water between the two probes creating an electric fence. the vid where the SS doesn't work is when the bait is placed behind the SS and behind the two current conductors, the shark can get to the bait taking a different angle. Looks like the shark has come in on the esds on the inner side of the anklet to minimise the electric current effect??

been using the esds for a few months, don't notice it at all whilst surfing.

on the odd occasion get a zap but liken it to putting a 9v battery against your tongue....no biggy.

1 thing they could improve is the velcro on the ankle strap. it's only single layer and not multiple like normal leggy ankle staps. Might unattach in bigger surf although hasn't whilst i've used down south.

That guy was the one who had a enquiry into the death. It turns out that he had the shark shield (and you can see it in the footage) attached to the hose. Therefor floating on the water surface and the shark shield only works once its submerged.

Im not saying they work or don't just what was reported in that case
