Cool! It's difficult, but don't let that put you off. My tip: as soon as you can waterstart, start sailing on the ocean. The river is for pansies.

Did think about it, if I could get a cheap kite and harness I would give it a go, done heaps of waterskiing so it shouldnt be to hard, I like windsurfing better tho.

If your having a family holiday then It would prob be ok , but if your after a surfing holiday then I would think of other options. From my experience there are a **** load of people thinking the same thing you are and sure the waves get good but those fkn Brazillian agro tools really spoil it for everyone. Yep you heard me "FKN BRAZILIAN AGRO TOOLS" .
Yeah go on use your red thumbs , truth hurts!!!

Screw Dreamlands and the Bukit with your family.

Way better off staying in Seminyak and darting out the Bukit or even better the East Coast in light winds when it's gonna be good.

That way your wife gets to shop and spend all of your money, (happy wife, happy life) plenty of great food, (Rumours, Kaizan, Bali Cafe, Grocer and Grind etc etc etc) waves out the front of Padma, Dunnybowls and KDT for the quickies and an easy dart to wherever you want with a driver. I Just got back and you can still get a driver in a brand new airconned 8 seat van for 50K Rp for a mornings surfing and him waiting to get take you back if you can hook up with a couple of people.

Yep - with CMC on this one. Even look at Tuban (sth Kuta) for some really affordable resort properties with nice accom/restaurants/pools and shops and waterpark nearby for the family. Nice beachies out front and airport lefts/rights close by. The family will be much much happier and it will be soooooo much easier to slip off for a surf if they missus and kids have entertainment at the doorstep.

After staying in down town Kuta for many a year we discovered Seminyak and would never stay back in Kuta, quick to echo beach Canngu and the by pass is just around the corner for a road trip to the other side.Dont forget the boats will take you down the Bakit, so you can pull up at any break

Oh and do yourself a favour if you like Indonesian Food.

Warung Yogya in Legian, just beside Legian Snacks, across from Loji Mart on Jalan Legian (I think it's called).

The Nasi Campur is the best on the island, with a water, Ice Tea and some Tempeh with Sambal for about 20,000 Rp. It includes a light vegetable curry, a plate of rice with assorted goodies and you can't even walk you're that full and it still only cost you $2.50. I started going to this place in '95 when Legian was much smaller and Legian has blown up all around it but this place remains the same. The menu may have been laminated is the only change.

It was in Lonely Planet and on Getaway in '92 or something and has gone nuts ever since. Best Indo food I have ever had on countless trips eating in the Warung all over.

Just came back from Bali last Saturday - was there for 2 weeks with wife and 2 young kids. We spent a week at Balangan, Bingin and Uluwatu. The surf was excellent - only small for 2 days out of 7. Balangan has the best beach but the wave can have quite a few sections. Bingin was the best for surf however the beach not so good for family at high tide. We stayed in a Warung right on the beach - Nyoman Nyoman - family room for about 30 bucks a night. From Bingin you can paddle to Impossibles and Padang Padang (20 mins). You can see Dreamland from Bingin. Looks like a nice right hander but the only place to stay is the massive expensive hotel which is now it's known as Nightmareland. Ulu's had the best surf however no good for family. (see photos from post last Saturday). Could maybe walk from dreamland to Bingin at low tide. Paddle would be best.

Best time of year is now for surf however it does get pretty crowded. There would have been 100 in the water at Ulu's the day I was there however there are quite a few peaks and the peaks are quite shifty.

After that we went over to Nusa Lembongan for 7 days - in my opinion this is the best family spot in Bali. The beaches are the best - there are 3 breaks Shipwrecks, Lacerations and playgrounds which has a left and right. There is also Ceningans on the other side of the island which you can surf when the main breaks are small. Accomodation is well priced and only scooters on the island.
