I reckon you are restricting yourself if you dont give it all a crack at some stage for whatever reason.

I started on a shortboard, went to longboarding and have now re-discovered shortboarding but now can take out either and am enjoying my surfing more than ever cos I can surf more types of waves.

Sometimes waves are good enough for both so I split the session up, happy days!

I'm with souwester. Shortboard/longboard, depends more on conditions than age and fitness.

Mac would you consider riding a shortboard in the future?

I was a shortboarder all my life until weight and age got the better of me,ok more the weight.I wish I could still ride one,it would be like surfing on ice if I did,to be honest I would suck.Son rides them I still have an interest but too heavy now days

I can't see it happening. I place quite a bit of importance on fitness and unless that goes out the window I don't want to struggle on a longboard. Maybe if I surfed less critical waves but I don't often come across longboarders and if I do one of us probably shouldn't be out there.

I know you guys are hard core shortboarders, however what if,you couldn't ride anymore, would you just stop surfing or hope on a longboard and surf another 20 years?Would you ride one then?

Anyway, good luck on the search this weekend.

I ride both. Both are super fun in the right conditions.
Nothing better than cruising on a LB when it's knee high.

a lot of the waves where I am are not suited to longboarding and I don't mean I surf big, super sucky waves but just dumpy short and involve a bit of duckdiving. not the pointbreaks of north east coast. i tend to just go for the short fat boards if they get a bit fatter, same principle easier to paddle.

Mac, You've seen pics of the MC islander 8'2" I have in another thread. That would be the ticket because it's a true shortboard ride with a beautiful glide and being 23" wide it has the stability that would allow you to be relaxed and carve it up again.
Sure Bob could shape you one just like it. The deep single concave is also one of the key elements in that board.

I would stop eating pizza and drinking half a carton every night and get off the computer posting on Seabreeze and exercise a bit to lose the blubber so I could still enjoy life instead of settling for a second best(way worse) option.
Plenty of old hard bits of gristle still ride short board, just because you get old dosent mean you have to give up on the BETTER options. Choose to live, not suffer on a plank.

But I guess it depends on how much you enjoy the sport and dedicate your life to surfing,,,,or pizza and beers.
We all have the choice to get old and fat so you can only ride a plank,
or get old, stay fit and make the most out of life, probly live longer to.

Funny, however I've always lived an active lifestyle other than maybe 6 years were I let it go,I train 4 or 5 hours pre week surf 5 to 6 hours also.
Only have the odd beer or two on the weekend don't eat rubbish, you have 100kg guys that are blubber as you say however I'm notPerhaps
you should watch a good HP longboard video this may give you better insight.I see so many shortboarders struggle in some conditions their wave count poor their rides also poor,if only they rode the correct equipment for the conditions they wouldn't be riding a plank

I think it's all about having the right equipment to suite the right conditions. When the waves are really fat and people are struggling on short boards then the long boards come out, or the seabreeze comes in the kite comes out and if the surf is good short board for sure. It surprises me when guys are sitting out there in the ****est conditions bitching about a guy on a sup when he is the only one catching waves because he has the chosen the right board or blowing 25 knots and dudes are sitting out there like plebs catching no waves. I love riding my short board I think it's the best fun out of the lot but in the wrong conditions it does get frustrating and I would rather be catching waves having fun than sitting there bobbing around in **** conditions but that's just me.
