I'm not interested in hearing anyone's opinions about the perils of cheap offshore board makers vs local shapers but am wondering if anyone has tried one of these 3D printed boards from Disrupt. disruptsurfing.com/product/ I would like to know how a printed board performs / holds up. This technology is obviously progressing quickly bit I'm surprised to see boards on the market already Edit - link was wrong - disruptsurfing.com/product/the-hidden/
The actual board you buy is normal blank machine shaped, they just print off a 3d model , I think.. I may be wrong , I guess a 3d printable board shape is not far away in the future though.
I asked the same question a while back as I was considering using it as a cheap option to try new boards and shapes.
I actually ended buying The Hidden as a cheaper way of seeing if the hype about the Hypto was warranted but was shocked/disappointed by the look and build quality of the EPS foam. Probably my own fault as I probably set my expectations too high - it is a $350 board after all.
More than happy give you my review if you PM me. One thing I will say is that the customer service from Gary was exceptional before, during and after my purchase.
Hey bene13, basically my issue was with the construction. All along the stringer and in certain areas of the board you can see the missing balls from where the EPS foam was laser cut. Its then just glassed, and in my opinion it looks terrible (although you do need to get up close to notice). Its like it was somebody's first effort at constructing a board.
If they had managed my expectations about the construction and had close up pictures of actual boards the website then I would never have bought one, as I would have rather purchased a 2nd hand board for the money, but that is just my personal opinion. I am sure that they have many happy customers as a majority of people are picking them up in person, and they are still walking away with them. I believe that they can supply PU boards that have a finish that we are all probably more used to, but I think this goes against the idea of it being a sustainable and more environmentally friendly product, plus they are more expensive.
I don't want to bag the product or the concept, and as I said it seems like there are many happy customers, it just didn't work for me. Its the first time I've not bought from my local shaper or a well known brand, and it will be my last.
I've surfed it once and it was OK, but I was dark on it from the get go which probably didn't help. It will now stay in the garage as a loner or for the kids first board as I doubt I'd get much for it 2nd hand.
Mitchbat, my advice to you would be to view one before shelling out your hard earned. I believe they have a few distributors on the East coast, but not sure about WA. Happy to fire you over a few photos of mine if your that interested.
