Anyone here love surfing old dirty boards? I have heard people consistently mention 600 - 800 dollar boards which I am sure surf great! But financially that's not on my radar. I spend around 100 - 250 on boards (300 max). I fix them at home and they look so tired. Re-do fins and although the repairs are not good to look at, money talks! Just wondering if there's anyone else out there that surfs an 'old faithful', that's been dinged a hundred times, or surfs an old style board because that's all they've got.

I always get faith when I am down south (not that I surf there, scares me) but you see some old crusty local animal paddling out on a nasty board.

I'm not talking water logged or brown boards. Just old, discoloured but well loved. I always repair digs straight away so they're never water logged, but my goodness they're discoloured and far from white! Anyone in the same boat?

I spent $80 on my 5'10 warner. And it goes alright! It's still White and only has pressure dings.. Nothing major

And I bought my mini mal for $250 last year, also in really good condition

Second hand boards are cheap if you Look for long enough.. Don't need to go for a discoloured old beater! Although I'm sure they probs surf just as well

That said.. I just ordered my first new board. haha

Not quite the same, but I buy new boards and surf them until they are off-colour and pressure dinged to the max - and usually have 3-4 of my home-brand ding repairs too boot... usually get rid of them when the fibreglass starts to seperate from the blank under my back foot... the last two have been at the 4-5yr mark of being my 'daily' ride.

Whereas my mate must have had about 7 boards in that time - usually within 18months of the last one and only an inch or two different in length. Crazy, because he never goes back to an old board - yet never trades them either...

Once I find a board that I like I stick to it until it's well due for retirement. I find once it has that first and second ding, I tend to not worry about the board anymore and as a consequence put it into positions I wouldn't if it was all shiney and new (kind of like the new/old 4WD thing).

Oh, and my first board came from curbside hard/bulk rubbish and my second a car-park swap meet!
