Unfortunately nothing much will be done, who cares about a few surfers? Until a young kid gets attacked,,, then watch the action.. \... call me cynical?,, you betcha..
Suba a concern I've always had is that GW sharks feed on bull sharks. With GW numbers are in big decline is it plausible to think that Bull sharks could be come more of a problem?
I still found the funniest part about keeping his face of camera..
It turns out that it was a friend of a friend who was "attacked".
Bullsharks are a funny shark and one I'm more weary of than any other species. Their comparitively high testosterone levels make them extremely unpredictable. You can go from hand feeding them while diving to be rammed extremely hard by them as a display of aggression. Plenty of night divers in the Swan River have reported being hit by them in the tank. Never happened to me thankfully.
To be honest I'm surprised more surfers don't get nipped by Bulls more often. Especially around Perth given they breed in the Swan River.
I am more worried about my kids getting hurt or maimed by fwits wearing no leggie, clubbies going through the break in surfboats, blue ringed occies while they play in the rockpools, speared by a wayward beach umbrella when its windy, or run over by a hyundai wagon with 25 stoned Jap surfers inside trying to park at Snapper or happy meals at Maccas bull sharks pfffftt
I tend to view it the same. Granted, living alongside sharks is a bit more of an actual consideration in WA. I'm still under the opinion that the last 2 years of attacks were an anomaly and unlikely to be repeated; I think the lack of serious white shark encounters since the Wedge incident (july 2012) supports this somewhat. Regardless it's definitely shaped the way a lot of people think about the water, especially surfing and diving.
The problem that generates is that people start to lump all shark encounters together as though it's all one interconnected issue, regardless of weather it's the seasonable southerly migration of Tiger Sharks and Reef Sharks we get every year (more so now with warmer water), the emergence of "juvenile" bull sharks from the Swan River or the seasonal arrival of White Sharks from off shore, usually timed with seal activity (which itself is being effected by the warm water). I mean, people even get ancy about whale sharks off Perth as though it's going to attack someone.
****....did we (read: I) just jump start another shark debate?
^^^^good. Don't want to rain on everyone's parade but from the link I believe this happened on Friday? The surf was absolutely thumping with some whopping great big double overhead close outs. Looked dangerous actually. Wouldn't suprise me at all if a wave vs sand bank did that damage rather than a shark. After all he said he didn't even think shark until he got to shore and noticed that way the snap was....could be a coincidence?

It happened Saturday Arvo around 5 i THINK. Fisheries boat was cruising around for a look sun morning
In the news bulletin in the link, the say "yesterday" and news bulletin was on Saturday night so must have been Friday. i was there Saturday morning when they were filming the surfing for the bulletin. Remember wondering what a spanker in a suit with a massive tv camera was doing on the beach. They sent a dude with a go pro out and also filmed him from the beach.
I was under the impression it was Friday also. Guy was chucking a sicky.
Yeah me too. Thats why he didn't want to be filmed
This morning it was so sharky on my own. Clear as water, birds diving all round the area chasing fish. At one point i thought i heard a ping and started to think i could hear a tagged sharks beacon Obviously i could't but i had to get my head into a better space so i could enjoy myself...
Geez you regulars crack me up! The guy is a very capable local surfer who basically grew up surfing Surf Beach. He wasn't having a 'sickie' he just couldn't be identified because of what he now does for a living (let the idiotic speculation begin). If you'd seen the beach that day there were a few large rips and he was surfing in the middle of one. He was away from the crowd for a short time when he paddled for a wave and while he was swinging to his feet got hit from below. He fell into the wave but his board remained out the back of the breaking wave but underwater, upon surfacing and noticing the extensive damage to his board he swam straight in.
It happened on Friday afternoon and he was contacted by Fisheries on the Saturday. His board was examined for the best part of the day where it was declared a definite shark bite. Given the murky, stirred up area he was surfing Fisheries deemed it was most likely a bullshark but an opportunistic smaller white could not be ruled out either. The widest part of the bite was around 40cm apparently meaning the shark wasn't huge but still very angry and/or hungry.
I was kinda hoping for a few of you blow-ins or weekend rent-a-crowds to be bitten but alas, not to be.

Cant see why it would crack you up. The report said he couldn't have his face shown for work reasons. SO what are supposed to think Hoping ill of a a fellow surfer from a shark attack really makes you a friendly guy..If your considered a local of Surf Beach then you can have it
