Well...uhm...what's your current technique? I've seen people do some real retarded attempts at duck diving. Maybe watch some youtube clips on how to do it.

Oh...and timing is everything

Boards that small should do it easy..

If I surfed a board that small I would have to wear a snorkle and mask

I've always just dived using my knee's? Maybe will have to try and push of with my foot instead..It's one of those skills that looks so much easier than it is..

Duck-diving lessons from a pom? Now I've seen everything.

I don't use my foot. I've tried a few times but it seems too much hunching for me and destroys my streamlined position.

I always use my foot if I can. My mate is a shocking duck diver and I made sure I practiced the technique even on waves it wasn't required on.

It takes him at least twice as long to get out to the line up as me and he burns way more energy in the process. A good duck dive feels so good, especially when the person next to you is now 3 metres behind you

I used to use my knee but changed up to the foot...its much better when the swell starts to get up in to the ohhhh shiiiiit range

Yep foot, I also really push down on the front/nose of the board and sink that sucker. Also angle the board a bit, that makes it sink quicker for deeper duck dives.

Thanks Any Tips, Also when i duckdive i cant sink the nose unless i move to the top of the board, and i usually fall off. And in the video how does that guy get soo deep? When is straighten my arms the board did not sink. Remember a biscuit is hell buoyant.

Do some bicep curls if you can't get it down...

some boards are just harder to duck dive then others.

I try but eat ****e every now and then...I don't know about you mate, but the worse feeling is just when I thought I've timed it right and I'm coming up and I think to myself its all gone really well, then all of a sudden the board smacks me in the face and I start flying backwards. Look up and realised I'm back where I started

Who opens or closes their eyes when duck diving?

I've been practicing heaps but Im still not getting deep enough.. If the wave has just broken I still get sucked back a few meters.

Still.. Even if I get thrown around, it's always better to have a tight grip of my board then to bail on it

The red dots are where my hands and feet are when paddling.
The blue dots are where my hands and feet are when duck diving. (I can only sink it in this position.

Perhaps your not getting deep enough because you are diving to late. Maybee try to dive a bit sooner. Push as hard as you can on the front and as soon as you feel the wave on you push hard with the knee or foot or both whatever it takes. Just keep trying. Good luck.

Spent a bit of time yesterday trying to use my foot. OMG what a difference. When i got it just right i found myself getting spat out the back almost. I found i kept getting thrown off coming up as it was literally spat out.

Gave me heaps more confidence paddling into bigger sets.

Now just to pay attention a bit more and not try and come ashore where the reef and cliff's are

It definitely is.

OP, if you're getting sucked back, maybe try angling your bad upwards more just past the midday point of the duck dive. It acts similar to a sea anchor on a boat, creating serious drag that resists the sucking back motion of the wave. I do that when I butcher a duck dive and can feel myself about to get sucked back into the foamy wash. Saved me a few times from being pulled back and down.

Maybe try to push the nose down first. You'll struggle to get the board down flat. (sorry that may be very obvous)

If you are having troubles sinking the volume try to sink one rail at a time. You can duck dive mals if you do it right, just try different stuff, knee for shallow, foot for deep.

My favourite duck dives are when you're in 1' of water and you know you're going to hit a reefy bottom and there's a 6' wall of whitewater bearing down.
