i got the pipeline model for christmas (late present).
I'm happy with it, but i'm never in perth an i never get to surf anymore so havent checked its accuracy.
I still dont know how to use it properly.

Got my vestal watch last year. Super happy with it. The model is called the brig. Spun me out when I went over to perth the other week and the thing was reading flat! I had no idea there was jack all tidal movement, I thought it was broken haha

Sorry I can't but whilst we are talking tides I would just like to recommend the Schralp tide app, I love it.

I bought a Rip Curl "lineup" analogue watch which is a great watch if you live on the Eastern States I am told by Rip Curl. Buy a good digital Rip Curl tide watch apparently you can set them for the zone you are in but none of them as far as I know are 100% correct. They are a good indication, you still can't beat a tide chart.

Their after sales service is excellent and the watches are top quality.

I can't recommend a good one, but I can tell you that my Nixon tide watch died after 3 years.

I don't know if 3 years is a long time or a short time for a watch to last, but there you go.

My ripcurl tide watch filled up with water after 11 months, luckily just within the warranty, so it was replaced. Unfortunately they didn't give me a receipt for the new one and that filled up with water after about 9 months.

My next watch was a Billabong phaser. They developed a crack in the plastic screen due to a manufacturing fault in the body after about 10 months and they replaced the watch for $50 as they said the fault wasn't covered under the warranty.

If this one gives up the ghost, I think I'm going to go cheap and buy something that may only last a year but at a 10th of the price of some of the big surf brand watches that only lasted me a year.

I've also tried a few of those really cheap rubber band watches for surfing but they only lasted one surf!

I also had a G-Shock G-Lide but it now sits on the bottom of the ocean somewhere around Alexandra Headlands, Sunny Coast after a thrashing yesterday great watch though.

For me the G-Shock is the go.

Bought my old Gulfman back in 2000 just before I deployed on operations.
The gun oil, sunscreen and general UV exposure destroyed the band after 5 years and now I need a new rubberised case but hey 13years is good.

If you fork out the extra $$ for a solar powered model it will pay for itself over time in money saved from battery changes and pressure testing.

All tide watches will require you to enter the Latitude and Longitude of the location.

I also had a Billibong Phaser which just fried itself after 3 months! Justs keeps rebooting every time I try to set the time. I want to try that Vestal Brig next. It looks cool and is reasonably priced.

I've got a Citizen Automatic Dive watch that has been running for about 12 years without winding or failing. It's had a few new bands in that time, but is still going strong after an extensive life in, on and under the water. Doesn't do tide predictions, but access to good tide data is only a click away on a myriad different websites or apps. And for your local beach, familiarity and a good timepiece will let you know when the next low or high is coming.

I've had a couple of tide watches, but never took the time to actually figure out how all the functions work.

I would suggest though that of you plan on surfing with the watch, get one with a silicon band and decent locking system.

There's nothing worse than scrambling to get over that bomb set when your $250 watch unbuckles itself and starts slipping off your wrist!

Casio protrek are good, they have tide, moon, compass and are solar. I prefer cloth type band as if one pin comes out it is still held by other pin (with plastic or metal shes gone)

Do all of these watches provide local data? I.e. there's no point buying a watch that doesn't support the areas I spend time at.

the rip curl oceansearch one has world wide surfing locations, but for WA it has Esperance, Albany, Margaret River, Scarborough, Lancelin, Geraldton, Kalbarri and carnarvon so got a lot covered.
Plus it has a Spot X where you can programme your own data in to it

G Shock for the Basics but the tide chart is not all that accurite ( within 1/2 to 1 hour ) but I have had mine for 5 years and no battery change yet and hasn't missed a beat.
Cost around $100

Am now using the Rip Curl Ocean Search as well for the past 4 months and can't fault it yet. Tide chart gives you very good readings when set.
Cost around $250 ish. ( But I got mine on a super sale at DFO Brissie Airport for $70 ) With warranty.

Hope this helps.

There are so many elements affecting the way waves break that I could never spare the cash for a watch telling me simple tides. I have a couple of apps on my phone for when I'm travelling & a few websites that seem fairly reliable for info on my local. But due to all those elements effecting waves, nothing beats popping down for a look. Swell direction, wind direction & swell period seem to be the best indicators for me coz tide doesn't have as much of an impact or a great deal of movement most days. But I am on the opposite side of Oz...just reckon I'd prefer an app on my phone that covers everything rather than a watch that just covers tides, unless I lived in Indo. That said, $70 seems reasonable compared to big brand names expecting heaps more. You could get a waterproof phone & headphones for what some brands are asking.

Hey Mate,

If you live anywhere near brisbane the DFO has the ripcurll ATS watches cheap. I bought 6 months ago for $70 and have worn it since kiting and surfing. Works great. I had a ripcurll tide master before that for over 5 years. The only reason I replaced it was due to you couldn't grit the watch band anymore.

Cheers

I've had Ripcurl lasted about 8 years, just got a Nixon 'The Supertide" which is pretty cool and shows a good tide graph for about 200+ surf beaches.

Never bothered that much for perth. Rare enough to get swell, and maybe the wind right.. If the tides right as well, I'd buy a lotto ticket.

Just.
Back to hanging around out wide and catching a few strays. Not much paddle power still. If it doesn't improve much in the next 4-6 weeks, off to see an 'elbowologist', or Dr Nitsche! (I've tried everything but . ie upper limb orthopedic )
Also, too many at my fav local lately to battle with, so looking at alternatives.
