Does anyone know what the deal is with camping at Wedge Island. I've just bought a camper trailer and was thinking of taking the wife and kids up there for a weekend. I read on line that camping is banned. Does anyone with firsthand experience know if this is true? If so where the best spots to camp are? ie north or south of the island.

Ah mitch, firstly, that place doesn't exist. Secondly no, you're not allowed to camp. Thirdly, if you did camp and did it with a big-arse camper the chances of getting busted would be much higher than a guy with a fishing rod stuck in the sand lying in the back of his wagon catching a few Zs waiting for a hookup. And fourthly, if you did get busted and kicked out, the wife and kids would probably be less than impressed. And I guess fifthly, if you did drive through with a camper, people would notice and it's a small place so word could get around to Those Who Would Prefer You Not To Camp and they'd soon find you.

Fun Police. If the Government had any sence when the road went in they would have put in camping areas and open the place so it can be used. Name it and use it I reckon. Imagine how cool it would be if at every ten or so Ks there was a camping ground, a few boat ramps and even a shop or two and a kangaroo. The back packers would love it a bit of tourism would flourish and away you go. Instead Nah you cant camp! No wonder we get called wait awhile or the boring state.

Yeah, that's what our beaches need - more backpackers.

Had a handful of backpacker kooks out the other day, one of the stormy days last week. They were hooting every mushburger slop wave that came through. A 3' wind wave "set" comes through and dickhead bails his board in front of another guy. FFS, it was weak windswell.

Fair point, but it looks a little ridiculous when three 20-somethings are constantly hooting everyone on a crappy blown-out stormy day. It was nice to get wet, but it was nowhere near good waves or conditions. Anyway, the hooting paled in significance against the board-ditching.

You would have loved this Legion.

I had a surf at a known spot a couple of months ago, it was a long shot whether it was going to be OK or not but I gave it a shot anyway. I was on my own and when I got there one boat was anchored up with six in the line up. I watched for a bit and they weren't making many so I hopped in and sat wide for a bit. I said g'day but got the cold shoulder. They would have been in there mid 20's but they were like a bunch of school girls the way they were carrying on. Every wave was "How did I look that time, I tried to do a turn on that one?" Then came the replies, " You looked great, the barrel was right behind you, that turn was wicked...". It didn't stop, the constant need for reassurance and compliments was crazy. The constant hooting, cheering and way over the top compliments were unbelievable. After watching them waste nearly every wave for about 20 minutes I went deep and caught the next set wave and took my turn from then on much to their dissatisfaction.

Hope you're well.

On Monday afternoon I surfed at a bank. It sucked. Inconsistent 1'. Noone within 100m one way, as far as I could see the other. Bit later few guys came jogging down the beach. One guy alone paddled out to me. Right. I didn't have a problem and we chatted briefly and he moved on to 50m away. Couple of others started out 100m away but a set or two came through and so they drifted over. OK, why don't you sit on top of me. They were kooks with wheatbelt plates. But everything was "sick" and "wicked" and they were frothing. At one time one of them commented on how he was having problems with the waves not having enough push for his board. Bull****. They were just kooks. Days of our lives.

I get what you are saying. Nobody likes crowed waves. I just think there may have been an oppertunity to allow people to camp and enjoy what the big state has to offer. A bit like the old Injinup days although it did get a bit out of control down there. Maybe because of the lack of ammenities. Its the same at Trigg and Scabs. Make it a bit more assesible is all im saying after all they are here anyway. There is so much coast. Plenty of nothing coast that if you look a bit you will find. With that in mind why not open a little bit of it and enjoy it. Let the people camp fish dive surf boat live.

Some mixed feelings re camping at wedge..

BUT.. it was seriously getting out of control with the volume of bogans/tossers and their big setups - drinking, partying then jumping on dirt bikes, in cars and tearing up the beach right amongst toddlers making their way to the shoreline. It was pretty scary stuff sometimes and far from the original wedge vibe.

The bitumen road only made this worse so something had to be done

Legion and Zuke: Simply typical gen-y behavior which makes me want to vomit sometimes

A friend of mine was one of the DEC rangers that worked Wedge. She hated having to be a fun nazi but yeah, all the idiot bogan **** wits had to spoil it for everyone else...like they tend to do in all areas.

Don't be ridiculous. BB can not control the proletariat went they are out doing that !! better off indoors watching prima Dona athletes on your brand new wiz bang 80 inch screen and have coke cola and Harvey Norman at ya every 5 mins. Whilst keeping yourself cool in your ridiculously big house burning lots of lovely coal to keep your brand new air con going, so you don't move so you get fat and spend **** loads on private med bills. And all of that produces lots of lovely taxes. GET IT !!!

I fished and surfed wedge for a couple seasons, basically the road through has destroyed it. It's also ****ed Cervantes and jurien. Maybe I'm getting old but the line ups have changed localism is frowned upon but when it was around you'd all get waves if you waited your turn. Perths population has grown 100 per cent in ten years and the marority are on the mines doing equal time swings there's no quite midweek surfs anymore yanchep is crowded midweek and on weekends you can't even get a carpark. Once you do and you enter the line up your snaked and dropped in on by dudes on sups, kooks eggrolls assholes, foreign nationals and any other manner of retro cool awesome board riders who can't duck dive paddle around the break, take their turn, not drop in etc etc.. I'm over it and a lot of the reasons I surf have been eroded away at most of the breaks I grew up surfing with a few crew. Nowadays if you go to these waves dudes who surfed there for years won't even go out cause its a kookfest...

The biggest problem I find with campers is a complete lack of respect
They pull up in a beach car park in there wicked vans, cordon off an area and make you feel like a stranger in your own home
**** and toilet paper strewn everywhere
As for surfing with them 9 times out of ten you end up yelling at them for not knowing any etiquette outside of their hemisphere
Clueless pains in the ass
Euros are the worst
I don't hold back yelling at them these days. I just tell them how it is

Honestly , I wish I got as excited on surfing as the "kooks" described in this thread .

I remember when I was in my early teens , only been surfing a couple of years and I would sit out there all day with it onshore just cause I was stoked to be surfing . "Those were the days"
Then I travelled , surfed some world class waves and not much compares to that... I don't surf much anymore. Now I rock up to the beach and don't even go out most of the time cause I cant be stuffed , or "its going to be onshore soon" , or "bloody tides are wrong". Most of the time I end up going home and taking the dog for a swim or hanging out with the kids.

When the surf is "on" , I'm there and charging but what the hell is wrong with me?

Sometimes I wish I was a kook again, just stoked on surfing and having genuine non judgemental fun ........ it was soo much more enjoyable back then.

We were all kooks once apon a time, no point whinging about it.....
