Yes no matter if your good or bad it will improve your surfing but if you get knocked out in the first round what do you do all day,sit and watch,judge!
I'd rather be in the water!Having said that they are a lot of fun and great bonding!

been surfing for 35 or so years, saw one contest. last years whalebone classic. It was entertaining enough but only because ther wasn't much surf. if there had have been some, I would have gone for a surf.
i agree that if you are into that sort of thing being in competitions is probably fun. However if you get knocked out quickly then you only get to surf for 30 minutes. Clubs are probably good for the comraderie, but I have mates who I surf with so I get that anyway.
Surfing isn't about formalised competing, although to a degree we all compete in the water, it's about fun. The old adage still stands " the best surfer is the one having the most fun!"
