Im expecting the arrival of my new weapon this week and am questioning why my tail pads always start to peel off after 6 months or so.

I have been using one brand in particular for quite some time and also wondering if others experience same problem using this brand.
(Calamari grip - you figure it out)

In the past I have just used warm water to clean the deck, but wondering if using say an Acestone , or even a thinners would be a good or bad idea....
Turps?? Something NOT oil based.

Genuine question here, what would you recommend?

Cheers , Kearnsy

give it a light sand with some medium grade sandpaper first
and make sure all the shine is gone from the surface
the local shaper calls it "keying the surface"
seems to work with mine!!

A good rub of metho, let it dry for an hour, stick the grip pad on and let it take grip for 24 hours before hitting the water.

give it a light rub, then clean with wax and grease remover.

place pad and board in sun to warm up slightly then stick down and press firm.

And leave the pad in the sun or the car for 10-15

I actually had to do this with the whole deck of my epoxy - could not get a good based coat of wax on there - was just too slippery...

Oh - and I use Mineral Turps to clean the board before putting the tail pad on - and try and leave it for at least 12hrs before using.

Calamari Grip...I've used Humans of Fun pads on every board I've ever owned and never had a peeling issue and I've always just stuck it straight on, working the edges for a minute or so.

Polish the area with baking powder, pre-heat the grip with a hair dryer or put it in the sun for a bit, slap it on, place a folded up towel on it to give even pressure before piling books on it to weigh it down for at least 24 hours. Then hope you'll never have to get it off again.
Oh, and use scissors to round any corners before-hand.

Nothing's ever worked for me. I use Creatures grips. I end up sticking them down with Kwik Grip once they start peeling.

I cleaned mine with "wax-off" and then a clean rag. Been on for a year and no sign of lift- shapers tailpad.

After i stuck it on i gave it a few days to set before i took it in the water.

My new board has a creatures tailpad, ill see how it goes..

Turps to remove all oil based residues, then metho to get rid of the turps residue. Acetone works a treat, but is far more noxious for you as is thinners. I avoid those things. Let the board dry in the sun - the metho will evaporate quick fast - and apply your deck grip. I have never had deck grip peel, but then again I don't like deck grip and have only put it on three or four boards.

Must be the flow-on power turns from all those SUP sessions.

I have also always applied to a warm deck but it still seems to come up. What grit paper are we talking? 600 or 1200

Sorry to steal a thread but you wouldn't do the same for a Go Pro mount, so what chemical to clean it? Maybe even a Citrus cleaner

I generally use anything between 200 400 grit.
The object is not to create a smooth surface but to remove all of the shine
and leave the surface a little abrasive.
Prepsol is good but as a rule i just give it wipe with a damp cloth
and let it dry before sticking them down and leave it for a day or so if i am organised enough, invariably the swell comes up that day.
I then press every part of the grip down manually especially around the edges.
Most grips come off eventually as result of the board depressing which depends on how heavy footed you are.
