My son is 6.2 and 75 kgs, his latest board is 6.3 and in my option it does not work for him ( have not told him yet ) He has gone from 5.9 to 5.10 to 5.11 to 6.0 to 6.1 to 6.2 and now 6.3. Still got a couple of them.
My thinking is the board has got to FIT the type and size of wave. He surfs Snapper and D-Bah which are performance waves and normally around 2 to 4 foot.

So what do you think of board length re- wave size ?

Thanks for your advice guy's

I recon he should go for a 6,5 x 18 1/2 x 2 3/8 still low in volume at those mesurments.

Gee doggie that's a lot of board to fit in a small wave.

I was thinking shorter board to fit in smallish surf, maybe
I am wrong again

I'm ~74kgs and after years of riding boards that didn't work for me I got a Wayne Lynch 6'6" tufflite and it works in pretty much anything I want to surf in.
Having said that I like shoulder to head high but it handles double head easily (WA reef breaks) and goes great at burleigh, snapper, etc... (I visit regularly)

If it broke tomorrow I'd buy another one without a second thought.

The Ocean and Earth shop at Coolie airport hires them out, so might be worth a try before you buy ?

For the small fat gold coast waves that are too small for the tuffy a retro 6'2" twinnie does the job.

OK so are you guy's saying that a 6.3 board is fine for smaller waves, the reason for my post is I was at the qky pro and noticed that most of the pros were on 5.10.5.11 and 6.0's and got me thinking that 6.3 may be too long for the same break

Have a look at what Bottle Thompson is riding, he is about the same size.

You gotta remember that the pros have their boards shaped specifically for them and go through several a week. If you are a recreational surfer, surfing your back yard break in all conditions, it doesn't make too much sense to ride what the pros do.

How many of us drive factory prepped race cars on the road ?

6'1 to 6'2x18 1/2x 2 1/4 around these dim. is ok for 75 kg but you can go shorter if you widen it.

I have 3 questions....

1. What is it exactly that isnt it working for him? cant turn.. cant keep up speed.. just doesn't feel right..

2. He's surfing some good waves but what experience level is he at? Maybe he needs some more foam to make it easier, or different rails to make it a bit more forgiving

3. What are the other dimensions of the boards (width/thick)?
I think we can all pop out all different sizes/dimensions of boards for him to try but wheres the problem???

I agree with comments above.

the diamesions are not critical, well they are but whats more critical is what the borard won't do for him.

does he catch waves?, does it paddle easily? does turn it ok? Does it hold speed through flat sections? Not that D/bah and Snapper have many of those

Is he happy with his boards?

why do you think it is not working for him.

I went from a 6'8" x 20" x 2 3/4' to 6'4" x 19.5 and 2.5" Its a little harder to paddle, so I paddle harder and it surfs better im 6ft and 90kg. I may miss the occasional wave on the smaller board that I may have caught on the longer board. I find as I'm getting fitter and stronger the smaller board is not a hinderance at all

Thanks guys, just my option from watching him surf.
The one thing that I have noticed is his snap turns
are not as snappy and it got me thinking that the 6.3
length is to long, he goes ok on his 6.1 and 6.2 boards.
He is no Kelly, but goes ok!
I dont have the other dimensions atm ( work )

i'm about the same height and weight as your son
i ride a 6"0x19'x2'1/4 bourton standard quad in anything under 4 foot and it goes nuts.
Goes good in hollow waves and the mushy stuff as well.
anything over 4 ft ill ride a 6"2.
