Hi all - looking to have a bash and see if I can catch a wave north of Perth as I'm moved to the coast... I've been looking at mini-mals but I'm not sure how big to go.. I'm 6" and around 100kgs..

Also, any good breaks on Perth's Northern beaches to learn on that aren't going to p*ss off the regulars?

Cheers,
Cam

Ay Cam, If I were you I'd start looking for a mal around the 8" range mate. Seen as this is ur first board Id go for a typical mal style rather than a mini mal (usually around 7" range). Your going to find it easier with more board under you. Lets say 8" long, 21' wide and 3' thick. I notice ur a big boy so im thinkin these dimensions might be around what ur lookin for.
As for breaks you should be ok around south Trigg or even Mindari backbeach. Just remember to watch out bro. if ur only learning that glass hurts ay

Hi Kearnsy - thanks for the reply..
I've heard that a bit more board is going to make is easier to get up, but real hard to turn. 8' sounds like the go then. I've seen a guy who shapes some nice ones (looking anyway) on ebay going for around the $500 mark delivered - http://stores.ebay.com.au/Leachys-Oz-Extreme-Gear - but they seem to be mostly 9' and up so maybe a bit big.. Also I'm a bit worried about having such a big board on a crowded break as the last thing i want to do is take someone out with it and my learner skills..
Been told City Beach in Karrinyup could be a goer for a cheap learner board around that size you mentioned so will check it out..
Thanks for the heads up on the glass - I got skegged hard as a kid and nearly got an artery so it's taken a while to get interested again..
Cheers,
Cam
