Is there a glass product made from bamboo fibres now? It would make sense.Bamboo is supposed to be one of the stiffest and lightest natural fibres.
I have seen boards made with a bamboo laminate but not heard anything about bamboo fibre.

Interesting, because I recently bought a beanie which (according to the label) is made from 50% bamboo, 50% wool. After wondering how they made bamboo into a wearable textile, I came across this:

www.bambootextiles.com.au/bamboo-information/how-is-bamboo-textile-fibre-made/

I suppose, to use bamboo as the fibre in a fibre reinforced polymer, you could stop one step short of spinning it into yarn and weave it into matt

I had a quick look and most of the ones I saw had a bamboo laminate bagged onto them. Some had a woven thatch type laminate. Similar to a straw hat.
Would be interesting if there was a cloth that could take the place of glass or carbon.

from the website it says:

"It is specially knitted - as opposed to woven - to stretch in multiple directions allowing it to lap around rails very easily and creates a spring-like tension in the outer skin of a surfboard."

Wouldn't this make it useless as a reinforcement in resin? If it can stretch, then it isn't going to add any strength under tension... which is the whole point of fibre reinforcement (as I understand it).

Think what there trying to say is the way that they weave the cloth makes it easier to comform to differing radii.

I have purchased some of the bamboo cloth for a hollow wooden board I'm building and hope to laminate in the next couple of weeks.

The cloth is amazing stuff. It looks a lot like t-shirt material and has a heap of stretch. It is 95% bamboo and 5% lycra (or something similar). I have done a bit of research on the net and there are a couple of methods for laminating as you need to get 25% stretch for it to work properly. One method is using double sided tape so when you lay up the deck use the tape on the bottom or rail of the board and stretch from there.

The other which is simple genius, is to cut two pieces the 25% smaller than the board template, sew together and then slide over board like a sock. Hang weight or similar on the tail to keep tight. I think I will give this method a shot. Just need to remember sewing machine lessons for yr8 or bribe wife or mother in law to sew for me.

Hey Tim, what if you taped it front and back and a few on the sides to get the stretch and then vacuum it to hold it in place. I've got a pretty good vacuum set up now so if you want to bring it in I'll give you a hand.

I vucummed my carbon kite board and was kicking myself that I didn't do the surfboard the same way (both are surfboards). I envolop bagged it so you just laminated the cloth put the peel ply and breather down and stuck it in the bag, worked pretty well.

Tim can you post a link to where you found the bamboo cloth if it's different that what DL out up.

I purchased the cloth from Grant at Surfing Green. He is based near Noosa and right into sustainable surfing bits and pieces.

surfinggreen.com.au/

He also sells leg rope plugs that have a hole covered by a piece of gortex cloth (lets air through but not water) at the bottom of the plug so there is no need to add a seperate vent for a hollow board.

Still waiting for him to get plant based epoxy resin. From emailing a couple of guys in the US they have soyabean oil and linseed oil based resin all figured out. Main problem now is producing in bulk.
