Just back from Bali. I had 18 days of freedom before starting a new job & not going to get any lengthy time off till this time next year. Was originally going to go the Great Southern, then considered Lombok via Jetstar at the last minute. But my smallest boards are 6'4 & didn't want to risk it with the 6'2 rule. Was considering a a 2nd handy 6'2 but then Garuda had tickets to Bali, return for $400. So just went the easy option & I'm stoked we did. Had some good size swell, a little too big at times & the winds were a bit dry season like. But I think that helped even things out a bit. Coz the Komune crowd has made a big impact, spilling out onto what were reliable low crowd options.

Crazy thing happened while we were over there. A security guy from somewhere around the Hyatt resort, not Hyatt security but some other poor bugger got strangled by a Python. Apparently its some rare or unusual non native Python that got him. Freaky coz we were just a lil North in front of Tanjung rights. But anyway enough blah, here's some barrels.

Yeah its me in the pics & to be honest I was crapping myself on a lot of these waves coz it was only knee deep on the last 1/3 of the wave. I was lucky to only get sea urchined twice & a few minor scrapes. Also very lucky to have an awesome missus taking video & pics for 9 days. She's pretty good these days & even showed me a couple of things on my own camera. Local Balo boys found out she was a Japanese teacher on the 2nd last day & were keen to improve their J language skills. A lot of them go to Uni studying tourism & languages. Japanese & Russian are very popular languages to learn...cheers guys

Oh yeah forgot to mention the other bizzare thing on this trip. When we were driving home on Old Coast road at 2:30am yesterday. A work ute was on the other side heading the other way doing about 60 km/h in reverse LOL musta blown his gearbox & could only drive in reverse or he was making a funny vid for youtube

Great photos, did you stay at the komune? Is the wave packed now or are there set ups all along the the beach spreading the crowed out?

Yes, and the east coast NSW seems have to been flat and onshore for a while now too.

But i really like this pic; nice take off and the wave behind looks great.

If you can hold the curser near the bottom arrow of the page and scroll down, you can almost make a movie of this page.

some weird stuff going on with weather over there.
i spent 2 weeks in last july in kuta (dry season) surfing almost onshore the middles in the mornings, while ppl on the east side had a ball.
oh, and it was flat for few days too.
been there 6 times and for the first time saw it flat

No I stayed at the Gazebo Beach Hotel, $75 p/n for our own freestanding 2 story villa (Joglo) right on the beach in central Sanur. Plenty of places to get a massage, eat & shop to keep the missus interested in coming back next time...Komune area was a lot busier than last April, I popped in a few times to check it out & surfed the area twice. Crowd was between 18 & 46 on the main break. I surfed there when there was 18 people & it was highly competive. Would have really annoyed me if I wasn't already tired from surfing 8 days in a row. People taking off too deep, snaking, paddling in front of you...There are quite a few villas that finished recently & more slightly South due for completion very soon. Like I said the Komune crowd are spilling out onto the other breaks. Main break is definitely crowded, a lot of semi pro type guys. Generally ripping, but blowing heaps of waves by going for the big air & failing...Komune is a nice place, but drink/food prices are steep (Aussie owned). Warung "knowledge" just to the South still has the best Mie/Nasi Goreng for 150Rp & drinks for like 100Rp. Personally I prefer Tuban/Sanur so I can shoot off early to the best option that day.

Yeah we were all telling a friend of ours that Medewi was going to be blown out, but she scored great waves as well...there were guys who I asked if they were headed out & they said they were waiting for the tide to change. Luckily I had my WA sense of never trusting the wind & scored some glass before the SE/S winds kicked in pretty much every day between 10:15 & 11:00. Yep weird weather!
