Looking for accomodation/surf guiding/lesson package for a Bali holiday with our family (2 adults, 3 kids - 2 surf a little 6 year old wants to learn). Struggling to find something that suits a family (most surf trips aimed at adults). Would we be best to book accomodation and then sort out surf lessons etc. when we get there. Where would be the best area to look?

Cant beat Kuta / Legian / Seminyak for learning to surf - many surf schools in and around the area with many various deals available depending on your negotiating skills. Just walk along the beach and take lessons from the "beachboys" or look for the signs of RipCurl, Quicksilver etc surf schools.
No probs with accom in that area either.

Kutas long rolling whitewater is perfect for learners. Have never seen anyone fail to stand up if they try hard enough

Yeah, I tried Oddysee a couple of years ago. they were pretty good. They are based in one of the hotels on Legian beach, I think their coaches are Aus certified, but you could check... they're friendly and english is pretty good.
They do group , or one on one.
if you're willing to pay a little more they'll organise a guide to take you either to all the hot spots if you haven't seem them , or try to find some less popular (what in Bali?) breaks to have some fun on.
Whichever way it goes they'll likely start 'the kids' off at Legian or Kuta beach.
They'll also pick you up from anywhere in the main holiday spots from south of Kuta to Seminyak without any grief.
I'm not sure whether they are 'the best', but they're good. If you want some contacts PM me.
I still hang out with one of their ex guides that showed me around. ("Rudi" in my portfolio shots).
They'll have a ball..

They'll also do the usual , (for $20) , take photos etc of the kids learning.. The kids will love it..

I agree the Chill House looks perfect, turn up and they organise it all (according to their website), if only they would return my emails
Thanks for the tips guys, looks like it will be possible to just book some accomodation and turn up.

Another thought, there are a few surf companies at the Keramas, does anyone know if this area is family friendly? We actually have 2 weeks in Bali so thought it might be an idea to spend a week in the 'usual Kuta/Seminyak strip' and a week somewhere else.

We went a couple months back, we did the Ripcurl school at Legian (we stayed at the Legian Beach Hotel).

We did their reef surfer course, the first lesson was at Legian and they were pretty good with tips especial for my for missus and the next two days was basically surfing Cangu which was abit disappointing since they spent more time surfing than teaching anything.

Enjoy, still fun to get waves.

Wow - just read this from their website

Reef Surfer - Level 2

Build on the basics and master the techniques of reef wave riding. Level 2 courses are designed to prepare students for more challenging waves. The ?Reef Surfer? program teaches the surfer the skills for generating board speed from the wave, transitional turns (cutbacks), paddling on behind the peak of the wave, compressions and extensions (Top & Bottom turns). Study books are utilized along with imagery (Photo and Video) coaching to ensure results.

Price IDR 1,700,000 for 2 x 2.5 hr courses and 1 x 2 hr courses

BOOK NOW!

Jeepers if they can teach you all of that in 7 hrs then Slater should look out Is it one on one instruction with a video debrief ? Sounds like a nice bit of salesmanship to me.

Keramas area isn't suitable for learning & apart from the new resort has nothing you can't check out on a day trip from Kuta ie the Bali Safari park...Your better off around Kuta / Legian / Seminyak as Mocha said & just negotiating with rental surfboard guys along that stretch of coast. Waves for a young bloke learning are generally best just North of the Discovery Mall over the road from Waterbom park. Staying around there close to the beach will cut down on your need for transport & be the most family friendly area with something for everyone.
