I propose a 50% reduction in wave score for any surfer in th WSL that does any claiming after a wave... 75% for double fist pumps...

Kegs of Death excepted of course and only the look to the sky thanking God understated claim allowed.

Does it count as a claim if you mean it?

But basically yeah. Does anyone claim in real life?

I never claim but I would be lying if I said that when I kicked out of a wave and was under water I never let out a "yeeeaaaaah!!!" if I was particularly happy with a wave.

Arkgee is on the money, let em claim as it is a competition and they're out there to win, they wouldn't do it free surfing. I will admit claiming on ****ty waves is a bad look though. Every other sport competitors get excited for themselves when something goes well.

I think claiming is the most arrogant thing you can do. Actually, no, claiming or celebrating when there is still a hitable section remaining is pure arrogance. "What you just saw was so good, I don't need to produce another move" or "I expect a winning score here, if I don't get it, it's an outrage" seem to be messages that are passive aggressively sent with a claim. Can't stand it!

yeah you're right....lets not even applaud...lets embrace stoicism and not show any emotion at all....although...that may come across as arrogance.....just sayin

You get all that from a simple fist pump after a barrel?
Geez. Let's all just surf like this:

Cynical claims to try and inflate an average score or influence the judges -no

Sincere claims where you've just got spat out of a ten foot chopes pit, or smashed a wave the beach to get the score in the dying seconds - yes

Hard to differentiate between the two in the heat of battle - probably

If a wave is claimed and the score is less than excellent (above 8 points?) some sort of penalty should be inccured!

Yup, that's what I'm talking about... The claim that tries to sway the judges opinion... It's embarrassing... And even though the brazos are getting right into it, the worst offenders are Joel and Mick... Worse than Leighton Hewitt sometimes those two..

Yep, I agree with above. I saw jay Davies get a ripper today. Seemed so happy, he kind of fell off at the end. Got a 9.5. All class. No
Need to influence judges.
