A SHARK has attacked and killed a body boarder in his early 20s near a packed beach in the South-West.
The man was body boarding with five friends when was taken by the shark at 1.26pm today, police media spokesman Graham Clifford said.
It is not known if anyone else was injured in the attack.
“The deceased is a male in his early 20s," Sgt Clifford said.
“We believe we know who he is.
“The person was body boarding at the time with a mate and also three of four to five others were in the water at the time but unfortunately he was taken from the lower part of the body.”
Bunkers Beach Cafe manager Hamish McLeay said the water was full of people when the shark attack happened.
“There was another 20 people in the water as well,” Mr McLeay said.
“There is a big seal colony around the corner, he might have been mistaken for one of them, it's been known to happen.”
Mr McLeay said he had managed the café for six years but that this was the first major shark attack he was aware of in the area.
The area is a popular surfing and fishing spot known for dangerous rips and sharks.
More to come.
"Sergeant Clifford said police had identified the man however would not publicly release his name until his next of kin was notified. He said it may take some time for his family to be notified.
The attack happened at popular surfing spot 'The Farm', near Sugarloaf Rock at Cape Naturaliste.
He was bitten on the lower part of his body and suffered severe injuries. The man was believed to have died at the scene where Bunbury police are in attendance.
The beach has been closed."
Anger an sorrow for another marine murder in WA. Great whites a protected f-ing species-what nonsense! Too many people are being killed by these rogue carnivores. Coastal sharks should be hunted to extinction, so there will be fewer human lives lost to this senseless carnage.
No sarcasm. This is the third time I have come back from surfing, only to hear that another surfer was just killed. It may therefore be time to not only express sorrow at their loss, but also outrage that government-sponsored wildlife protection efforts may be contributing to the loss of human lives.
rscaife should we also wipeout cars, bikes, boats, planes, humans etc. And when we wipe out all great whites then what happens when a bronzie or a mako gets someone? condolences to the family and friends of the victim but "**** happens" and yes I have lost a friend to a white and had another friend damn close to losing thier life. If you dont like whats in the ocean get out!
Your absolutely right Smicko
Of all the days for a father to lose his loved one
May his family grieve in peace without the harassment of the media
May the surfer rest in piece
condolences to the family and friends of the victim.
but these are the risks we take when we enter the water,he could of easily have drowned, hit his head on his board or had a car accident on the way there.
Apex predators are an important part of the environment and it was just doing what it has to do to survive
rscaife maybe instead of killing all the sharks they should ban all water activities near seal colonies
****en prick of a day for it to happen Tim, can't think of anything worse than losing one of my boys on Fathers Day.
I was out there at lunchtime today, I didn't see the attack but like the reports said" it was perfect conditions for sharks today" rest in peace bro. I can't imagine how your whole world can be torn apart in a second doing something you love. Condolences to all his family and friends.
Where there any waves there Mitts?
Not trying to be insensitive to the subject, just me and my mate were trying to figure out why people would be surfing there today as the charts suggested (to us at least) that it would have been 5hitty.
Condolences to the family and friends. Hope he's getting barrelled big time now. Lets not lose respect for the ocean, i always feel privileged everytime i go out.
When i read about the attack yesterday i instantly just felt sorry for his family and his mates who were with him. Never even considered the threat to my own life. We enter the sharks domain and we should not complain if we are hurt there. Should we drain the sea if we are to drown, should we take away the beach if we hit the beach and break our neck, hell should we ban toilets as more people are killed in toilet accidents than shark attacks..
R.I.P. surfy bro..
condolences to his family and friends! RIP
Is it strange that it happened in the middle of the day? I was under the impression that the majority of shark attacks occur at dusk and dawn?
RIP YOUNG MAN,MAY YOU FOREVER HAVE SALT IN YOUR VEINS AND SURF AT YOUR DOORSTEP!
BEST WISHES TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
hey subasurf it was ok mate, head on the sets and nice shape to it, i left at 1pm because the wind swung.![]()
Cheers mate...I hope it didn't seam heartless to ask about the conditions...I just was trying to work out why heaps people where there because the first news reports said the beach was packed.
This is my opinion and every one has their own.
I hate Great white sharks. I wrote the same about the last attack. I don't understand how people accept them and just think it is a risk we have to take. It may be, I feel this safety because I grew up with little, next to 0, great white activity at our beaches and felt safe in the ocean.
The amount of people in the water compared to people walking or driving on the roads is not even close to be able to compare. We would have close to 15,000000 people on the roads in a day and lucky to have 5,000 in the water on 1 day, although sometimes it feels the whole country is on your favourite break.
Unlike what we are being told I am in the belief that Whites are on the increase and feel extremely safe around humans now.
As far as I know we are predators too. As a predator my main goal in life is to survive. Killing is part of my make up. That is how humans have become one of the top of the predatory list. I don't feel any discomfort in the fact that the Great white may one day be just a shark that once lived. In my opinion I would like to see them dead.
I would never consider my self a person who would get along well with the Greens member or a person from amnesty international. I have very blunt and close minded views and am happy with my view.
I am not a new generation save the world type of person. I love surfing not being eaten alive.
If I die and get feed to the ocean well I don't care, but not alive.
Suba, what youve been studying marine science for six months and your an expert on great white numbers, alot of the older more experienced sea goers would tell you a LOT different in regard to white numbers!
@ Suba mate you are spot on mate, but dont drag yourself down to his level..
A young man has lost his life, and condolences are comeing in ,when subasurf is telling some guy to go kill himself
over a silly coment he made about a shark, WTF
good one Doggie, you keep on telling Subasurf he is spot on,
No wories
he would know more about the subject than you would mate, or even me.
