Hello there,

I'm after some suggestions for surfing destinations in the Indian Ocean.

My wife and I are heading to Europe in July, and I'm allowed a stop over on the way to get several days of surfing in for me, and to break up the flight with some beaches for her. Any suggestions for some nice destinations along the way?

Must be close to an international airport (no more than half days travel), un-crowded, and consistent. And where I can either rent a good board, or buy one on the cheap. I'm not after a world class wave, just something consistent and fun.

Maldives looks like the obvious choice, but with the peak wave season, most of the stuff close to the airport will be crowded.
Western Indonesia might be ok, but not sure if there's anything close enough to an international airport to make it an effective stop over?
Sri Lanka possibly? But I heard that at time of the year, waves can be kinda fickle.

You can fly direct to Lombok from Sydney. Airport is very close to the waves (Kuta).

Will be a lot cheaper than Maldives!!

Maldives all the way
The wife will love it and so will you
You might have to take your own boards though
Anywhere is within your timeframe of travel to/from the airport

Maldives for sure. No travel as such, fly in, quick boat ride, then straight into the surf!
