Ok so it looks like i'm the odd one out of wanting to perverse sharks but i have a question that i am curious on regarding personal safety in the surf.

Once they start Drum Line fishing, do you think we should be notified that there is now a baited hook at our local beach? They have given notifications of locations, but is it far to ask for a sign post listing a possible baited hook with 700 meters of were we are surfing

Im personally really uncomfortable with it and will be surfing different locations because of them.

We don't have any drum lines out the back of our local. But we do have plenty of Cray Pots that are a hell of a lot closer than 1km offshore. The odd line gets cut when then the ropes drifting across the take off in winter. I see very little difference...

Mick and Todd i agree on both those points. I hate it and my last surf we had Ballooners next to us.
We even had cray bits floating near us..

My point was a should the government provide us with those details

No because some activist would probably sabotage or threaten people setting them.... No I don't think the locations should be disclosed.

Statistically, you are more likely to be hurt by a vending machine.

Actually I apologise... I can see my comment turned it into a debate. Seriously I apologise to you jb, your topic had nothing to do with a debate and I side tracked it. Let's not debate the topic, let's answer jb's post. And yeah fair call, maybe I'd want to know where they were too.

On a side note too, would you then have reason to sue the Government if say you were in said area of an undisclosed drum line and end up being attacked by a shark? Not sure if my logic is clear but wouldn't the government be at fault here for increasing the likelihood of endangering the public? Much like how that power pole sparked that fire etc which turned into a court case against the power companies?

JB, I can't find any evidence to suggest the baited drum lines will have advertised locations but it would make sense to do so. They will need to be clearly visible and well marked to alert water users of their location. I would guess that this would be akin to any type of unattended fishing gear like cray pots and nets. However, as I understand the "drum" will be the size of a keg or 44 gallon drum! This should allow you to see them from a fair distance away plus I'd imagine they would be orange/yellow, use bino's to really enhance your chances of seeing them! I agree that the locations should be freely available to the public but the threats from the lunatic fringe may effect that ever happening.

Gladly mate. We can talk about surfing not sharks... You've got a katana shark shields haven't you.

We have sharks here too, but we also have research, a tagging program and management plan.
This lovely article was from the wknd...

The upkeep on baiting the whole state will be expensive.

They are actually placed in the same spot so the area is not an issue. I was more think as a tourist or new to an area and as you hope out of your car and walk down to swim, at Say Mullaloo, should there be a sign saying "Baited shark lines used in this area" ?

Thanks Paddle pig for clearly answering. That was all i was chasing..

Is what I read today true?

So the drum lining got put back because of physical violence threats to fisherman.

So catching a shark is bad but physical harm to someone who is trying to earn a living is ok....

Thats the media's angle. In fact the only real valiance that has been proved is by the guy who took on Barnetts office. Sadly it turns out he has mental health issues

I managed to track down and speak to two companies that tendered. One said he had no calls at all but pulled out due to the negative nature of the event. He also commented he said he thought it would actually be cancelled and he'd be left doing work for nothing.

he second said he actually did receive death threats. But also conceded his mobile number was plastered all over his website. He said his wife was actually worried but he said he spoke to the perp on the phone and thought them more kids than anything. He pulled out, because of his perceived threats to boycott his business. He felt with such a large operation. for how small the tender was, it was not worth the negative press..

The police questioned protest leaders and have told them they have no evidence anywhere of any creditable threats, and was hoping they could point the police in the right direction. Haha the police even bought them morning tea

But papers sell better on negatives..

The other truth is a couple of fisherman i spoke with said the actually job description was near on impossible. They said the rules in which they have to handle a 4 mtr Great White on the end of a line once they pulled it in, was too difficult to offer and real safety to there crews, and still work with in the tender guide lines..

Hang on - is he valiant or does he have mental health issues? I guess he could be both ... a brave, crazy guy? Taking on a dangerous office building that has been terrorizing the neighbourhood, like a knight of old?

They have been drum lining / netting over here in QLD for as long as I can remember.

As far as I am aware of there is 1 boat that has a government contract that check the coast from Noosa to Caloundra ( around a 50-60 k's of coastline ) most days, weather permitting.
Most years they are catching between 150 to 300 sharks.
A lot of these are under 2 m long but then they will get some in the 3 to 4 m range also.

When surfing my local the bout will always pull a shark in with the boat in between the line and the beach so surfers and the public can't see what's going on. But you Know.
And when the boat doesn't move for 5 to 10 mins you know they are having trouble getting one of the bigger ones on board.

As with you guys over in WA we see more shark sightings / activity over the warmer months. This is also the same time as the whale season is under coming to a close and young calfs are easy prey.

In recent years it seems that one or two of these whales does get caught, but the guys at seaworld are quick to act and do there best to free any whales caught. ( Can't personally remember the last time a whale was killed from this happening )

This Doesn't kill every shark that is in my local area as I still see and hear of alot of sightings.
From memory any big sharks that die from being caught from being caught are towed out 10 or so k's off shore and cut loose.

I know this is a touchy subject with alot for the idea and also alot against it.

Myself, I know I do feel I little safer knowing this practise is in place over here in QLD.

My 2 cents.

If being valiant was measured by someone's ability to smoke pole...then yes I wholeheartedly agree he is valiant.
