i guess it comes down to what you can afford or how much you want that brand. imo i think alot of boards are over priced. mctavish is a great product yet very expensive,i would not mind paying the price so much if the man shaped the board,or even had the time to sighn it himself. that also goes for takayama and bennet. in saying that you are paying for a proven desighn and you know the quality will be great,im lost now

Is this a trick question

Its well documented I'm a fan of McT,however I really appreciate a good quality board,take Chrispy's Flow wow that thing is awesome,but I would never pay the asking new price for a board.Chrispy scored and cant wait to see it/ride itMct sit mid range imo,the other boards that I've seen posted here that I really like are the Munro and Astro's,both top quality.

I look at surfing and compere it to golf,which I played a lot a while ago,golf is expensive and it does matter whats in the bag,it can drop your handicap in half.Good clubs will set you back 3 plus grand,add green fees and its out of control.

Also I've gone and traded a bunch of boards the past year and I'm very happy with what I've got,if your buying selling boards often your going to do your money fast,so its up to you.Choose wisely,you've been around long enough without me telling you that

Break it down to pure contracted cost;
$275+ Blank
$375+ Glass - Minimum
$100-150 Extra for Realistic Glass Price, Tints, Sprays, etc
$125+ Fins & Box

So there's $900-$950 as a walk up start. That's why you won't see a new 9'0+ on sale for under $950. Unless it has Asia influence.
So $1300+ is not unreasonable. Especially for a good custom.

Having gone down the Astro path with a custom hand shaped board to suit me, tinted, wiz fin, etc for around a grand I'd be hard pressed not to do the same again for what ever board I decide I need next. Might try a Munro maybe??

Not knocking McT in anyway though as it's not a money thing for me, just trying to share the love with other shapers who are still hand crafting & producing quality product.

I used to always get custom short boards but in the last 12 mths i have gone back to buying off the rack as I have found boards that I was keen on in great nic second hand for a significant saving. I have also picked up a couple of new ones on sale at bargain prices. I do not think think that I would want to pay $1,300 out on a new mct (it would be nice to own one though) at this stage of my life. If I was minted it probably would not worry me though. For now I have a mortgage to pay so I can not indulge myself. Plus the GF tells me she wants a new car. Ahhhhhh.

Good luck with the new stick Chrispy.....drive for show n putt for dough.
