Seeing as there are so many mctavish experts in this forum just wondering if there is a cheaper and or better centre fin to stick in the razar than the ones for sale on the mcT website, 100 rods before postage sounds a bit much. the side fins are fine the centre one doesnt seem to work very well anymore

I would run any 7inch dolphin style fin in the centre with a GX or similar side and if you are getting into some more serious sucky waves I would beef up the sides to maybe a g1000 or M3 because once you start grabbing rails and leaning into those big ones you are gunna want to be sure the sides are gunna hold you in there. A bigger centre fin may give you a bit more hold and drive but if you are too far forward on the board in a very serious wave its very possible to pop the centre fin outta the water and then you wanna hope you've got those bigger sides to save your ass.

thanks for the info guys, might be just as easy to go with a original mcT fin. But found a couple of enviro friendly fins for half the price they both are 8in long. Look interesting and could get both for the price of one mcT. Have never really experimented with fins so I have no idea if they would work. The wierd looking one is supposedly modelled on a humpback whale fin and gives a lot of drive off bottom turns

hmm I have just realised that the locking screw and the sliding pin are on opposite ends of the fins to the the original, though I suppose that shouldnt matter...

hmm that humpback fin looks like it would create a bit of drag having such a complicated leading edge.
dont thinkk humpbacks were "built for speed"
just my $0.02

I'm sure you're right about the humpback fin being no special advantage, especially when it comes to speed, I once took and old fin and tried it.

There's a certain unmentionable nob in NZ who subscribes to the "best in nature, best on boards" intelligent design type theory of evolution. Rather than the more widely accepted and and evidence supported theory of Jury Rigged evolutionary change.
