thinking seriously about chucking my paddle and doing some pure longboarding again but here's the thing, i have a 10' 6" x 24" watercooled longboard (4 sale) and after riding the 666s for 3 or 4 years now when i get on this board it feels extremely narrow and about a foot too long. i am seriously thinking of a custom epoxy 9' 6" x 26 or 27 inches wide, i seem to be able to handle the 34" wide whopper ok. so what do youse think about that width for a longboard?

Don't do it

I think fast and narrow is a myth.

By myth I don't mean untrue, I simply mean "unnecessary".

Great for the drop at Wiamea or making it through the pipe or towing into ship sterns but not really for the day to day waves we take on.

I'll never bother with anything under 24.25" these days.

Problem is, very few blanks go that big without a glue up of 2.

do both.

I've seen a few shots of you on your 666 ripping so HTFU and go 23 wide
666 screws your surfing imho,just saying.

might go 9'6' X25" X3.5" but thinned out nicely nose and tail, rounded pin i think..

Sharpie i had trouble carrying a mal 24'' wide x 3 1/4'' thick under the arms and my arms aren't short how do you plan to carry a board of that width and thickness or do use those gadgets that you hold in you're hand and they go around the rails of the board.

Sharpie I don't reckon all that width will work.

On your 666 you use the paddle more than you know. Try riding a few waves not using it to pull you through turns and see how you go.

I'll get roasted for saying this here but in my opinion a good HP 666 surfs far more radically than a Mal. But, maybe I won't. Most crew riding Mals arent looking to go vert anyway, they glide, flow and nose ride and that's a good thing.

I wouldn't wreck what a Mal does best by making it a hybrid Mal/666 with no paddle.

i'll back cmc. one day a bit at palmy took the paddle to the beach and prone surfed my hp dc 8'8. without the paddle its far to wide to surf without. as a sup, its loose and fast, without a paddle to get stuck into it , it was hard to turn.

i did prone paddle my 14 ' at snapper one day with mac and the crew. it gave me a sore back which wrecked me for a race next day

Actually Sharpie these two gents above here CMC & Lacey would be worth having a beer or three with too , Fin maestros

23 wide by 3 thick will give you all the foam you need, particularly if you ask to carry the foam out towards the rails, without a paddle, you will find 26 will be too wide.

ok now we,re getting somewhere, and i here what you're saying, it does feel weird, wrong even, trying to surf a sup without a paddle. i have too many boards already anyway so i think i will scrap that idea. as for who to have a beer with. I want to have a beer with you pup. ok cmc and lacy can come too.

Geez Sharps - go 23 1/2 to 24 by 3 to 3 1/4 if you've doubts , it'll hold good value for resale , someone here will snap her up if you went cold on on it all for sure!

Actually, there is a problem in relation to prone surfing boards that are over 24 wide.

It's not a biggy, and it usually only happens if you're out there for more than an hours and getting lots of waves.

The skin on your inside legs just above the knees can start to get a bit worn away from straddling the board lots of times.

There's been occasions when I been on a trip to a place like Arra and it may be noticeable because I've gone in as many as 3 times in a day.

In a steamer, not so bad, but in a short leg wetty in can happen.

I get that one my normal LB, it's 22, are you making fun of my short legs... And anything over 23 I can't get my arm around and I hence I reckon can't turn so I'm outta the conversation.

But I reckon Lacey and CMC are spot on, my first Suk was 11x 28x 4 shaped like a big mal and without the paddle no chance of turning it, but as I said I'm a lightweight with short limbs

I agree with LL n CMC Sharpie....you get away with the bigger wider 666's as you have yr paddle to lever off. Big Spaz has gone pretty wide from memory on his 12 footers maybe he can add some user experience to the cause. Happy hunting.

I had a bit of trouble adjusting back to the lower volume of a long board after finding my Laird 10' x 27" exclusively for six months. In most surf you can throw away the paddle and it rides as well ( if not a lot better) than most mals.

Nevertheless, I got back on a 23" wide noserider for a few surfs and now it feels normal again. My 5' 10 fish is cool too. I think it helps to chop and change boards a bit more?
