Speaking cheap a guy showed a couple of us at palmy a log brought from a 'warehouse'locally.
Log style. Concave nose 50/50 rail. Tainted blanket style. Cut lap with pin line . A shade colour on the deck
triple stringer with a wooden tail block.

He had had it for 2 weeks and it was in perfect condition. Looked to be glassed well.polished too

let 100 to 150 per foot be thy guide for buying a board

I showed my local shaper the board I bought from a Gold Coast Warehouse (probably the same spot) for $400 with a cover and leggie. The quality is sensational for the price. Which he recognised, but he said his living is providing niche boards for discerning buyers who want their Hypto Krypto as a swallow or their longboard with a little more rocker or....

I have bought one new board off the rack in 20years and 3 or 4 second handies. The rest (20 boards it so) have customs for a variety of reason, mainly revolving around trying different stuff to see how they make boards go.

And they don't make a kegs like that anymore. You would need a custom for that baby.

$480 seems incredibly cheap for a triple stringer log . Would like to see a pic of it.

Also, there after sales service was fantastic. I bought a board off the rack, took it to Tallows, while waxing up spotted a nasty ding on the nose rail and decided bugger it I am surfing it and we'll see what happens. Waxed and surfed it. Rang them up when I got back to Coolangatta and they let me return it and swap it for a new board. That certainly has me recommending them to certain people for certain boards and considering them for different things for me. Having said that, like all stock boards, they don't necessarily have what I want.

Watching the Bluff at Alex yesterday morning there were 18 plus out. Every so often a 2-3 wave set would come through. Most of the sets I saw come through there was at least one of the same guys on the waves.
Not good odds.
Kind of times where a cheap board you don't care about would be called for because the ones who think they own the place will drop in on you so having a cheapo means you don't mind the company if some accidental bumping occurs.
Just duct tape that ding and keep on smiling.
Am I wrong here or do you risk your $1500 plus board and when they bang rails with you keep calm and carry on?

I think your on the money I was on the lookout last year for such a board,be dammed if some kook is going to run into me or one of my boards,miss a heap of waves because of this.

Duct tape. I'm not going to surf some piece of sh1t in fear of others. I would rather my favourite board get beaten up rather than the other.

The most relaxed fun I've had on a longboard was riding a Bic 9'4" rooster at Johnsons, Noosa. I wa calling people on rather than off because I knew that no matter what happened the Bic would laugh it off.
Riding my expensive DVS full carbon boards I was in a different mindset.
Different strokes for different folks.
If you do your own ding repairs I suppose its a different matter but i don't.

My son is an apprentice sparky and couldn't afford a new mal so he bought one of the 'warehouse' boards for around $600.
He has had it for about 2 years. It has finger compressions on the rails from eskimo rolls, the deck looks like a golf ball, any small bump ends up with a repair needed and the bottom is scuffed and scratched from who knows what. I would add, that he really looks after all his gear, never thrashes anything, his short board still looks new.

That surprises me because my board has been absolutely bullet proof. The glass is hard as. Performance wise I bought it expecting nothing but the ability to plane on knee to waist high waves, and was pleasantly surprised to find it did that at Snapper and then also hooked into 8 foot waves in Ulladulla and Port Fairy. Mine was a 6'10" Sumo style thing though so a bit different.

Bit confusing since you're saying a copy may not mean it works and more than likely these surfboard warehouse boards are a copy of some decent shape. Early on my mate on the Gold coast bought an un-ridden Takayama scorpion from them. They happen to have copies of the scorpion in their line up of boards. No co-incidence there me thinks.
By the same token the young shapers are going to be going off boards they've had/seen/checked out and so I don't see any guarantee that they won't produce some dogs along the way. Then if you end up with a dog by a relatively unknown shaper the re-sale will be lousy anyway.
All this from the perspective of an occasional longboarder rather than someone who rides them all the time so don't get bent out of shape about my view.
I wouldn't mind paying good money for a board I would ride the majority of the time but I still wouldn't feel good riding it in a wave starved crowd..

Can't argue that is a bargain but it's a sad fact of life that as Aussies are doing our selfs out of a job. The way things are going we won't do anything here soon. I am a mechanical engineer in the design field and they are farming out engineering work over to the Philippines and India as well.
